Check engine light on 1999 Boxster
Have a 1999 Boxster with two codes not sure what I need to do to fix. Codes are from Durametric reader.
Engine ME 5.2.2 P 1530 Camshaft adjustment bank 1 p 1340 Camshaft position with respect to crankshaft bank 1 exceeds limit value Could this be a sign of early IMS bearing failure? Engine runs quiet no chain noise. Turned off light and light came back on two days later at the same exact spot down hill stop left hand turn. Thank you John |

P1530 No triggering of the VarioCam actuator, unit is either shorted or defective.
P1340 Allocation of exhaust cam to intake cam out of spec. Most likely, both are being triggered by the VarioCam actuator issue. There are no "early" signs of IMS failure. Once day, either you fine your oil filter full of metal, or the IMS has totally failed, and you need a new engine. That is why people PROACTIVELY replace their IMS, once it starts to go, it is already too late to do anything about it.

Thank for the reply. The VarioCam actuator is not covered in my Bentley manual very well only talks about in removing valve cover with engine out of the car. Is this something that can be replaced in the car? Guess i should go to U tube for how to replace it. John |

It's easier to do out of the car; it can be done in the car, but it is like building a ship in a bottle.....

was working on the linkage for the transmission multifunction switch [automatic] and saw the cam actuator on the valve cover in line with the plugs. I removed the two bolts that look like they would hold it in but does not want to move. Do i need to remove the valve cover and take it out from the back side? Thank you for your help. John |

Ok just looked at the part in the catalog and looks like mount from the inside will need to remove the cover.

Which also means you will need cam retaining tooling to prevent snapping the cams when you remove the cover.

This is the flat plate that comes in the LN kit to hold camshafts in time when replacing the bearing? Or is it something else to hold the chain between the two cams? Wayne's and the Bentley book only talk about the flat plate.

No. The use of the flat plate, which is actually made for a different purpose, only will work on three chain engines (only one cam on the five chain engine has a slot for the tool to fit into). You have a five chain engine. The actual retaining tool bolts into the same place on the cylinder head, but uses bolts that are tightened into the ends of both cams, and will securely hold either style cam, and also includes additional cam bearing saddles to hold the cams while you are doing your repair. Amazon lists them.

Well i bought the special tool from Pelican and all the parts from Porsche and spent the weekend replacing the solenoid on bank 1-3 not fun on your back in the car. Reset the light drove ten miles and the P1531 code is back dead short. Every thing seem to go back together well. May be I received a bad solenoid really not looking forward to doing this again.

Are you sure you do not have an electrical issue (wire, etc.)?
