What brand/type of Oil you use?

Hi,
I just bought Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ 10W-30 – Higher-Mileage Vehicle Formula oil, and I'm wondering if my 79' SC can handle Synthetic Oil.

Any comments about this oil? Mobil1.com has an oil selector tool but there is "no data" for my car

Check this link:

http://www.mobil1.com/tools/which/index.jsp

What oil do you recommend?

Thanks
-J

I use Mobil1 tri-synthetic 15W50 in my '75 914 2.0L with no problems. Burns a little, but no more than any other type oil.

Hi Warren914,
What is the difference from 15W50 to 10W30?
I think I know the answer, I'm probably wrong but here it goes...
15W is for summer 5W (or a smaller than 10) is for winter but the number after the 'W' I have no idea....

I decided to buy 10W30 because it says "higher mileage" but does it matter during summer time?

Hopefully I'll drive my car this weekend and when the motor is really warmed up I'll measure the oil level (apparently it can vary for quite a lot)

Thanks
-J

Oracle,

Can you findout what the previous owner used?

I would recommend 20-50 for your 911 in the summer. The 20 is the weight and due to the temps and cooling by oil these cars need, I would recommend the higher weight oil.

I use Castrol GTX, a couple mechanics recommended it to me. But then again I use Mobil1 in my Bimmer.

Hi,
I asked him today and he mentioned Penzoil 20W50; That's thats what the mechanic has been using on the car.
But I think you're right since these cars usually run warmer than others I'll return the Mobil1-10W30 and get a 20W50 as you suggested.

Thanks a lot for your comments.

Some info at this link for engine oil. Should answer many of your questions.
http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/mult_gas_and_oil/mult_oil_article.htm

On my '92 Saturn SL2, I used 5w30 during winter and 20w50 in summer. It was burning oil, and the heavier weight reduced consumption. At 260000km (about 156000miles) I wasn't worried about engine life expectancy.

Related to engine oil is the filter. Interesting information here. I was quite surprised at the comments on Fram filters, but after taking one apart for myself fully agree. I use AC Delco filters on my cars, and choose the largest that will fit the car.
