Many Pelican's in Calgary? or near by??
I have a bit of a smoking gun on my hands. I finally pulled the head on my 86 944 only to find what I think is nothing wrong with it. All the teeth on the timing belt are intact. I'm wondering if anybody in or around Calgary would have a look at what I have on my hands. I will gladly pay you for your time I;m just not sure what it is I'm trying to fix at this point!

What was the original issue? I had the balance shaft belt go on mine, but the timing belt was fine.
Many many years ago...

One day it took a split second longer to start and had an odd shake to it. Small yet I could feel it. I was only a km from home so I got it there and turned it off. It kept running for about 30secs. I was sure it was the timing belt slipping. Now I'm not 100% and I'm not sure what I'm looking for. I really want to get it back together before it gets to cold out!

If it's shaking my money would be on the balance shaft belt; these are known to have to be replaced every so often. As far as the run on, I have only had that happen once (on a jeep) when the electricals got screwed up.
Good luck.

BBQ and helping
Jordan, yes we can come over for a BBQ, but not to many Calgarians have a clue about the 944 system.

I'm finding out more and more ow rare 944 knowledge is around Calgary! I went to FOUR auto parts asking about rebuilding a starter motor and ALL of them said 94... what???
Sigh... The search continues. Will anybody answer the call before the snow flys?!?

Still looking for help with the idle?
A shaking idle isn't normally a timing belt or balance shaft belt problem, but is usually a large vacuum leak or fuel/spark issue. I've owned a couple 944's, always done my own work and worked on a few friends 944's as well. Not an expert by any means but I have 4-5 years of experience with them ![]() What part of Calgary are you in? Rebuilding the starter is easy, I would have thought NAPA or partsource would have the kit to rebuild one. Personally though, I'd just take it to an experienced electrics shop, they should have all the bits on hand to rebuild it properly. Bosch likes to use commonly-sized parts in their starters. I have yet to find an electrics shop I am happy with in Calgary so I can't really recommend one. Typically it will cost ~$40-$50 for a rebuild kit, or $100-$120 for somebody to do it for you. The biggest things to worry about are either when they are put together completely wrong (i.e. don't fit or spin backwards), or the big power wire coming out of the solenoid having it's insulation break off and shorting to the body. Good thing is starters are super easy to remove (_MAYBE_ 10 minutes to get one out) so if they're done wrong it can be fixed easily. I have a spare starter, but I forget if it is early or late. On a N/A it doesn't matter but I was going to fit it on my 951 to take its starter in to be rebuilt (it jams about 1/2 the time, and squeals like a banshee when starting)

Thanks for the reply. I'm still looking for a shop myself. lol one said it would cost 325 for a new one! You can source them out for less then 75 bucks shipped! if you still that extra one it would help a ton!
p.s pm replied

Yeah, don't bother with a new starter, get the existing one rebuilt. I'll check in my garage the next time I'm out there whether mine has the big or small body on it. It has been a while and I don't remember (though I am about 75% sure it is the big one).
Whats wrong with your current starter motor?
