Shipping and declaring

This winter I will be shipping my seats to the US to have them fixed up and recovered. My question is how do I register my seats with customs so I only have to pay taxes on the repairs and not for the full value the seats will be insured for on the way back. On the way down I will insure them for, lets say 1000 but when the come back they will be insured for 2000, I only want o pay on the extra 1000, any thoughts, has anyone done this before.

I am not sure about shipping, but if you drive across you can collect a piece of paper from Canadian Customs.

How are you going to ship? Truck lines?
you will need to do up a commercial invoice with values,
keep a copy of the bill of lading, and the commercial invoice, for the return customs clearence. {proof of export}
on the commercial invoice, put as much info as you can.
seats being sent for repair, or re covering, should be put on the commercial invoice. take pictures before and after.
when you go to clear back into Canada show the proof of export and the invoice from the company who did the repairs, you should only pay on the work done and not on the value of the seats prior to having the work done.

I shipped my DME to New York for uprade/repair and UPS charged duty before it could be delivered in the US. It was returned by USPS with a very little declared / insured value........no duty on return. It appears that the insured value is what you will be charged on. I also declared it was sent for repair, but didn't matter.

USPS: Brokerage/Duty Friendly, max of $5

UPS: Brokerage/Duty Fuc%ers, they charge what they fell like... I've seem a friend of mine pay $25 on aq free CD software update from H.P.. They just don't give a "caca"

If you think that UPS is bad try FedEx....you'll have a nice size 7 poop chute.

I appreciate your concern. Anytime you ship with UPS you will get nailed. That being said you do not pay on the insured amount you pay on the invoice amount. When the seats come back there will be an invoice that will accompany the seats and the amount on the invoice is what you will be charged duty and gst against.

No need to register anything. On the way down you will ship them and mark " for repair" with an invoice value of zero. You should still be able to insure for $1000.

The other thing to look at when shipping is to use the UPS and FedEx express / Overnight service. I have found many times that overnight the parts is cheaper as there is no duty charged under this "premium" service....and you get your parts next day. Small high value items will often be less...in the range of $80 for a next day package.

Not advisable for seats though

Correct, the Brokerage Fee is build-in in the cost of the overnight delivery so it could be a good option for certain item.

As for "duty", I never paid any on all my stuff (100% declared as I go NY at least to once a week). Of course except for food, I pay HST (thanks to MCGuinty the *&^%er). They never ask where the parts/item come from.
