Picking the Brains of the collective, engine tool rental program
Just thinking out loud, what do you think the feasibility would be for a canadian (Ontario) /6 tool rental program?
I have pretty well most of the tools to do all 911 2.0-3.6 engines. Most I bought, some have been given to me and some I've made. These tools are a huge investment and I only use them once and a while. How much for rental? How long of a rental period? (thinking one month) Rent as a kit or individual tools? How would you do the damage or loss deposit? Shipping? (I can do PU my place or Oshawa) Is it even worthwhile? Or too much hassle? Not expecting to make big bucks, I expect the tools would only be out once or twice a year at most, but if it did little things like put a rennshifter, etc. in my car I'd be a happy camper.

Interesting proposition having gone through a build myself.
Looking back to the ski rental business of yesteryear, I'd say rent as a kit for four months at a time, customer pick up/or pay for shipping, rental calculated at 1/5 the current replacement cost. Damage/security deposit say 20% of replacement cost via an unprocessed credit card charge/cheque. Current pics of all tools a must. Hopefully this may start some discussion for you. Cheers, Johan

I understand where you are coming from here, but I'd be worried about how the tools come back.
How do your tools come back from a buddy or neighbour? Although many of us here are mechanically competent, there are many that aren't. It is a great idea tho and I'm sure people would appreciate it.

This sounds like a great idea. I think you would want a pretty clear agreement in place - even though you will be mostly dealing with stand up guys. I would definitely want to have photos of "before" the rental as back up. I think you could fedex them, too. with tracking.

Yes the deposit would be an issue. I think I've asked this before a few years back (maybe on the 914 site) and it just wasn't worth the hassle because of the deposit issues.

Can you receive payments by credit cards?
It would really help.

No... but Paypal, I could take a deposit and refund the difference.
