This is a Shintaro Black Paint Leica M2! (not mine) Shintaro is the best of the best.

The problem is it can take over a year before you get you camera back.

Painting it. No way would I do that to a family heirloom. You are simply the custodian of that heirloom until you pass it on to someone else in the family. Have respect for what you inherited and the future custodian.

It might lose some of it's sentimental value if you were to paint it a different color than what your Grandfather wanted, and bought. I think it may be better off displayed with a placard explaining it's patina rather than covering it up.

Why would you do that?

As noted full disassembly would be the only way to do it right.

Is there a concern with what kind of paint can be used?

Would there be a risk of off gassing that might coat critical parts?

But seriously, I'm no expert but most black cameras I have handled feel like it is some type of powder coating or a baked on enamel.
