In 2004 I was using a little gas generator with a window unit in 1 bedroom and it sucked.

In 2006 I put in the 17KW setup with 250 gallon propane tank.

I never go another chance to use it.

Then last year Irma knocked us out for a week, it was a godsend.

If you live somewhere like we do, it is a no brainer one less thing to worry about when a storm is coming.

I also just replaced half my homes windows with impact windows, I now have half the work to do when getting ready.

I was here for the 2004 hurricane marathon, so can relate. I didn't get a generator until the following year and didn't even use it until 2016 with Matthew and also last year with Irma. It's only a 5kW unit but that was enough to get the job done here.

Obviously - you have THE setup!

Doing the math.......they still have over $75K of my money.

Am I beeching about it?

No.

Is someone else?

Yes.

If you can't afford to live there and pay insurance for your own property without asking people in fly over states to federally bail you out then you shouldn't be living there at all. This is no different then the idiots that built houses on an active volcano and then want a federal bailout when lava ate their house. Infact the idiots that built houses on an active volcano had better odds lava wouldn't get them then the idiots living on the east coast and FLoRida who have to keep plywood handy to cover up the windows every other year.

Its just a matter of time until the hurricanes that are lined up in the Atlantic score a strike on the many cities built out on places that shouldn't of had permits. I don't think they should have built houses in New Orleans, and then rebuild them after Katrina as its only a matter of a few years until the '100 year storm' is back.

There should be no federal funds to rebuild anything this storm damages except infrastructure. If your house get destroyed that should be a matter of you and the insurance company not the tax payer.

So you live in an area so active yall have to buy generators because this happens over and over and over and over. Yet, you refuse to pay for insurance because your cheap, so you shove your loses on the taxpayer. This is as dumb as a person on the big island who repeatedly builds a house on the south east section of the island after lava ate his home.

This is a mini-version of the banks that take home the profits but if their bets don't work out they want tax payers to bail them out (2008).

Kahl, I agree 100% with you about the feds paying for homeowners to rebuild over and over.

Of course you seem to have no information about where you live. California has huge fires, earthquakes and mudslides. Every state has had disasters. I think FEMA should be shut down. Just have a rescue for folks that deserve it. If you were under mandatory evacuation and you choose to stay, don't risk the rescuers lives.

From what I saw, Baz has insurance, and has paid way more than he ever received.

I have no federal insurance. It is 100% me paying a private insurance company for my coverage.

I do not even know why I am replying to this stupidity but here it goes since you do not read.

I purchased my 17KW setup in 2006 and NEVER USED IT until 2017 for the mathematically challenged that was 11 years of not needing it.

Prior to the 2004 Hurricane season I lived in Florida for 20 years and never had a storm hit me.

My friend used to be a 1/3 partner in a vacation home in the Abaco's in the Bahamas.

Hurricane coverage on the house would run 10K a year and this was back in the 1980's. They all paid cash for the house so they decided to not insure it and put 10K a year in a trust fund.

20 years later a hurricane tore the house from its foundation and destroyed it.

They had 200K in the fund, the rebuild it for less than that, and then continued to contribute to the fund.

Once my house is paid off I may consider doing the same.

Now lets discuss all those idiots that live in tornado alley.

Then we can discuss all the idiots living in California where they are past due for a yuge earthquake.

Then we can discuss all the idiots that live up North and get hit by Northeasters that are as bad as hurricanes, except with snow.

GH85Carrera 09-14-2018 02:35 PM

Tornadoes are rare, even in Oklahoma. They hit a tiny area. Unless you live in Moore, OK.

My 4 grandparents all lived to be over 75 and never even saw one in person. I know a lot of folks that never have seen one. I pay for my storm coverage. No government help at all. I have lived in Oklahoma for 40 years. I have actually seen two tornadoes. One was close to our house and it tore up some cars in a parking lot a couple of miles away.

For whatever reason, Moore, OK has had two very rare EF5 tornadoes. It is like getting hit by lightning and then getting bit by a shark on the same day.

Hurricanes don't sneak up on anyone, yet they kill a lot of people every year. Lots of people live in areas prone to wildfires. Mudslides, race riots, and earthquakes in mega cities are all likely. LA will indeed have a bad earthquake soon. No one knows for sure when, but soon. Hawaii and Washington have volcanoes.

Don't forget the folks that live in the area of Mount St. Helens.

Jims5543 09-14-2018 02:53 PM

I should also add, in 2004 I had 2 storm eyes over my house. Almost no damage at my home, I lost my office I will post that experience when I have time and maybe a beer in my hand.

In 2005 I had another storm eye over my house. No Damage.

In 2017 I had Irma pass near me. No damage.

In every case I went from 1 week to 1 month with no power.

Seems our power companies cannot figure out how to shore up their infrastructure to weather a storm.

Want to discuss Japan and their ability to go back to work a day after a a typhoon?

Edit 1 more point.

I just spent 14K on a new metal roof with the only thought in my head being "this will hold up better in a hurricane."

I just spent 20K on impact windows on the back of my house with the only thought being, this will make getting ready for a storm easier.

Slowest moving storm I can recall...still hasn't started here, and we're gonna dodge the bullet. Hopefully everyone else is doing OK. The worst is daze away for many though...down east :(.

URY914 09-15-2018 03:58 AM

It's stay almost stationary for 24 hours.

slow&rusty 09-15-2018 04:27 AM

Trying to catch up with the coverage and much of the pictures and videos are repetitive, is the worse impact so far the storm surge immediately along the coast?

I've seen pictures of many mature trees that have fallen, with the worst damage on houses and homes along the coast with the storm surge water. How significant is the standing water (for example) and the wind?

Stay safe and best wishes to all.

Beautiful.

The problem is, as we all know, is that the irresponsible weather reporting leads to consumer cynicism, which leads to apathy, which then get people killed when the real deal shows up.

They did a great job on the track of Florence, and predicting surge, etc., but since then, complete buffoonery.

WATCH: Looters raid Family Dollar as management asks police to pull back
Saturday, September 15th 2018, 4:45 pm EDT by WECT Staff
Updated: Saturday, September 15th 2018, 5:47 pm EDT
WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - While thousands of people struggle to overcome the damage left behind by Hurricane Florence, citizens in Wilmington broke into the closed Family Dollar Saturday on Greenfield Street to steal anything they could find.

WECT reporter Chelsea Donovan arrived Friday to find dozens of people carrying items back to the public housing community Houston Moore.

"When we came over the hill on Greenfield Street, you could just see people everywhere," Chelsea Donovan said.

Donovan and another WECT employee walked to the front entrance and back exit of the store at the intersection of Greenfield and South 13th Streets, witnessing people wearing masks and carrying out various items, including paper goods.

What Donovan didn't see was law enforcement and there's a reason.

Wilmington police sent out a statement Saturday afternoon that they were told by management of the Family Dollar to stand down after receiving reports of looting at the store.

Earlier this week, District Attorney Ben David said he was working to clear room in the jail so looters could be charged with taking advantage during disastrous situations.

Brunswick County authorities arrested four people earlier this week on felony breaking and entering charges.

With the situation out of hand, Donovan and the photographer retreated to their vehicle.

"I was concerned the whole time. I won't lie, but I was there to get the story," Donovan said.

We got lucky.

All the weather was north of us. All we got was some slight rain and some breezes.

Like politics, I’m tired of hearing about the weather.

Good luck to everyone in N.C.

I still insist I would rather know its coming and be able to look into it than to have it ignored until it is too late.

If people doubt the news the issue is still brought to their attention each time to look.

A person could compare the one that was "ok" and compare to what is happening now.

This is still a major event and it will be disruptive.

I agree.

The flooding in the SE part of NC will be worse then Matthew :-(

Measurements show the Cape Fear river at 36 feet as of 7:30 a.m. this morning, crossing the flood stage threshold of 35 feet. The waters are expected to rise, peaking at 62 feet on Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Isn’t that the truth. The daily weather report is now called “First Warning.”
“WARNING! It’s going to be sunny and warm today with light southern breezes.”

p911dad 09-16-2018 07:13 AM

Charlotte has had a little wind and maybe 3 - 4 inches of rain. So we have been pretty much spared of the disaster on the coast, and the inland flooding will go on and on:(. The only positive thus far has been that for the last week the media has been distracted 24/7 from their real job in Washington, DC and we have been spared that constant drumbeat.

62! I can't even imagine that.

Yeah, the flooding looks to be by far the worst part of this storm. Feet of rain on already saturated ground is bad news.

Here's another good fake weather news picture, Anderson Cooper reporting from a ditch to make the floodwaters appear deeper.

That timing was corroborated by websites with archived information and clips from a September 2008 edition of “Anderson Cooper 360” which featured multiple reporters capturing sights from around Texas on the day after Hurricane Ike, including Cooper himself at one point standing in waist-deep water.

However, the various available clips of the program document that the waters in the immediately surrounding area were both fairly deep and quite variable. As Anderson noted during that broadcast, his taking two steps backwards from where he was standing would have caused him to sink in neck-deep water:

So while Cooper might have been able to find a somewhat drier spot to report from and instead chose one that provided a visually dramatic appearance, he wasn’t misrepresenting or “lying” about the general state of the flood as seen in the finished program. And his positioning seems “fake” only when contrasted with that of the camera crew’s, who obviously could not operate under the same conditions as Cooper and had to be situated either on higher ground or on platforms that kept them and their equipment above water.

Guessing you are on the north side of CLT. I am a few miles east of the Quail Hollow CC. We had almost 10 inches of rain here. Heard several trees snap over the weekend and chainsaws running yesterday afternoon. The McMullen creek boarders my property. I've lived here almost 18 years. It was the highest I have ever seen it yesterday afternoon around 5. Probably up 20 feet from its normal height. It has subsided this morning, but still higher than normal.

What is kind of spooky was when we got a Flash Flood Emergency issued here yesterday afternoon. All the phones started ringing with a recorded voice telling us to get to higher ground immediately. Fortunately, we are not in a low area. What is kinda of amazing was that we never lost power for more than 1 minute. Especially because we lost power for multiple hours 3 times this summer during normal thunderstorms.

After going through four hurricanes in one year when we lived in FL. I wish the best for all hit by this monster . We had shingles torn off but no structural damage , I can't imagine the heart ache coming back to your home that is or was 6 ' under water ! And good luck with insurance claims :(
