Manhattan hotel.

I'm considering staying in Manhattan just before Christmas. Can anyone recommend a hotel? We're looking into the Algonquin. Anyone have experience with this hotel?

Belvedere mid town is a great spot.

No experience with the Algonquin.

We were recently in the Four Points in Chelsea and it was really nice, away from the hustle and bustle and the neighborhood around was pretty decent. Subways stations 2 blocks up in both directions with the Flat Iron about 5 blocks away.

We were also walking distance from the Hyline.

When my daughter was interviewing for her job, I had enough points for her to stay at the Double Tree by Hilton - Chelsea a few times.

See said it nice and well located.

It depends on what part of midtown you want to stay in. If you want to stay in Times Square, the Doubletree or either of the Hilton Garden Inns are quite good. If you want to stay out of Times Square but within walking distance of Rockefeller Center, Central Park, Columbus Circle, The Met, Etc., it's hard to beat the location of the Midtown Hilton. It gets mixed reviews but I like it. I have Gold status with Hilton so i get free breakfasts and upgraded rooms and I quite liked the breakfast and found the room to be good. If you want to stay closer to Broadway, I like the Radisson branded Hotel Martinique. My absolute favorite is the dear, departed Waldorf Astoria, which unfortunately is no longer available while it is renovated into condos or some other horrid piece of urban renewal.

I strongly advise picking your most central location and conducting your search from that point outward. You may pay a few dollars more, but in New York you're trading dollars for time - the convenience you buy by being close to what you want to see saves you hours of time - money buys you time.

We have stayed at various Marriotts, marquis at ts, Springfhill suites on 37th, courtyard by Bryant park and the moxy. The marquis had the largest rooms and the moxy the smallest. I usually see which one is cheapest. All good. Free breakfast at the spring hill but just the normal free stuff you see at hi express or Fairfield inns.

Check out Airbnb, Hotel tonight, and Dayuse..

You can get access to some really cool properties with Airbnb... you may need to be flexible and only be in a place for a night or two..

We've stayed at the Holiday Inn on West 26th in Chelsea. The subway is a block away. It's walkable to Penn Station and Times Square. The rooms are pretty small.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I’ve never found an Airbnb in New York City that was comparable in price and quality to a hotel in the same or better location. Maybe it works for larger groups of people or for students willing to couch surf. But for regular middle aged middle class tourists who want a middle of the road to nice place to stay, hotels have always heated AirBnb. Vacation Rentals by Owner has good vacation spots in resort towns, but I’ve always fallen back on good old chain hotels in New York City.

Waldorf Astoria. We stayed there two years ago at Christmas. Got a suite. It was great. And they had an awesome, awesome buffet.

The Waldorf was our first choice, unfortunately it will be closed for "renovation" for 2 to 3 years. You think they might convert to luxury condos?

LOL, I just told my wife about your thread. I told her I recommended the Waldorf. She said she has known it would be closed for Christmas nearly a year now. We going to DC this year. I told her to post so she can give you a recommendation.

My opinion, which may not be the same as all, is this. I was toiling over what hotel to use when I went. I decided to pick area I wanted to be in, I looked at a few hotels and grabbed one based on location. i.e. subway stations and POI's.

The hotel is used for 3 things. Showers, sleep and someplace to store my luggage while I am in town.

We were in town 4 nights were were in the room long enough to sleep shower and go again.

In other words, NYC is not about the hotel room it is about getting out and taking it all in. Our last night w were out until 2:30 in the morning after leaving at 8 the morning before.

If you like the Waldorf, that part of Midtown, and are OK with that price point, the following hotels are all comparable and a block or two away (I've stayed at them all):

- Lotte New York Palace
- Intercontinental Barclay
- The Roosevelt

As another option, you might consider staying just outside of Manhattan for an occasional break from the noise and congestion of the City. I've stayed at the Hyatt on the Hudson right across the river in New Jersey and found it to be very comfortable and convenient. It's built out on a riverfront pier with stellar views of lower Manhattan. There's a PATH subway terminal right outside the hotel and a train will deposit you at One World Trade Center in 10 minutes. From there you can catch trains to other parts of Manhattan and beyond.

I'm with you on this..... I pick the hotel based on where I want to be. I'm not looking for fancy - Hotel rooms tend to be small but all I want a room for is sleeping, taking a shower and storing my clothes.

+1 for staying across the river in New Jersey. Only a 10 minute PATH ride away from Manhattan.

Thanks for all the replies. Keeping in mind my wife and I are both 72 yrs. old and it will be colder than a well diggers knees, I'm not sure how much walking we will do. We'll probably grab something centrally located and see what we can see from there. Cabs, Uber and the subway are looking good. At my age, a comfortable hotel and nice restaurants are a must.

There are so many good places to eat everywhere you may just want to get out of the hotel and not eat there.
