Might help...

Global and regional violent crime is trending downwards and has been for many years. However our AWARENESS of violent crime is skyrocketing... ...hopefully because we see a better way.

And the odds of a meteor hitting you or getting cancer are added as well. But if you stay out of cars the odds of a car crash it darn low. If you stay off of trains, the odds are low. But yea, all those add up.
My odds of a train wreck are almost the same as a tidal wave getting me or landslides in Florida or Kansas.

The constant “the end of the world is nigh” crap pumping out of every radio, TV and newspaper outlet didn’t help. Neither did the internet feeds or constantly negative postings by people. I shut it all down and went on a serious exercise and meditation regimen which did wonders. The world didn’t end, the sun didn’t explode, there was no “new dark ages”, there was no rapture and things eventually got better.

Much of reality is self-fulfilling prophecies. If we think things are ok, they will tend to be. If we allow ourselves to be manipulated into thinking things are going to hell, we will tend to make choices that encourage that outcome. For one I choose realism with a tinge of optimism about our collective futures. The so-called “news” does nothing for us usually and most of it isn’t even news anyhow - it’s just sensationalist nonsense to draw indiscriminate rubes to the idiot box so they can be subjected to pickup truck and viagra ads.

I did the same thing in 2010, I was very unhappy and was finding news and internet contributing to it.

I stopped watching news, stopped reading news online, stopped with forums and started exercising and living my life.

I am very close to doing to same thing all over again, it is tiresome to see nothing but negative news 24/7 everywhere.

I quit FB in 2010 too and all social media, which I found to be bothersome as well.

Commenting on OP. I am realistic, I know the chances of a active shooter in a movie theater is nil but I do the same as many here, I look over folks walking in, and look for an exit plan before the movie starts. I rarely go to the movies anymore so this is really not a huge deal for me.

Something that does bother me and again, I know the chances are very low, I cannot believe there has not been a terror attack on a theme park yet.

I know they all have put airport level security in before you even enter the complex except, if I were a screwed up individual, that would be the best place to detonate a bomb, or launch an attack right where everyone is congregated at the entrance to the security checkpoint.

This bothers me so much I have figured out other ways to enter the parks through lesser known side entrances where the security points are empty with few people going through.

I quit watching news shortly after 9/11.

I remember right after 9/11 sitting in a gas station, next to a tanker refueling the station, thinking how easy it would be for a person with the wrong motivation to plow into the tanker, taking out the entire station, and me along with it.

It made me think- we live in an open society, and there is no way to keep it 100% open and safe at the same time.

Another story about how thing can get out of hand quick:

I remember standing in a grocery store line one bright early morning. A person at the back of the line knocked over one of those display stands stacked full of "impulse buy" items.

At the time, my immediate thought was "wow, that sucks, glad that didn't happen to me" as I had brushed against it myself and almost knocked it over seconds earlier.

The guy who knocked the stand over happened to be black. Some white guy standing directly behind me looked to me and loudly exclaimed "F#$'n N#$$r" as if I was his best friend.

We were the only two white people in the store at the time. Everyone around us was black, they stopped, and glared at us. Talk about being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

To say I was pissed off at this white guy would be an understatement. What a moron. Worse, how was I to explain to an entire crowd I had nothing to do with the situation.

I still don't know quite how I got out of there unscathed, but things can really escalate quickly.

Life is tough. Wear a helmet.

Rapes are sharply increasing also. Things are getting weird. Some of the rhetoric from some of our "leaders" may be encouraging unfortunate behaviors. Maybe.

Let's not go all PARF here. Speaking of which, staying out of PARF might also be a good way to curb anxiety....

Any data? Statistically speaking from a violent crime standpoint we are the safest we have been in more than two decades. Safer than even 5-10 years ago, and significantly safer than the mid-1990s. I checked the DOJ site, this applies to total rapes and rape rate as well.

Basic fire safety says you should be aware of the exits in any public place.

I agree that we are victims of modern news cycle and our 24/7 monitoring of electronic devices.

Now that I'm 61 I have little need for huge concerts (of the huge price tags) and loud crowded bars. I do enjoy a nice concert in the park or small local club.

I don't have a CCW (I would like one but in Kailf they are difficult to come by).

All that to say I'm not anxious and I live in big mean city and not really scared, mind you I live in the suburbs... and I do have several spoons.

Well if things are all going so swimmingly swell you have NO REASON TO BE ANXIOUS. You all should be happy and have a big smile on your kisser.

So to be in a state of anxiety for NO apparent reason is NUTZ.

So I do not want to hear anymore BS about anxiety or about how ****ty it is because it is just one of your crazy delusions...i want to see and hear about how happy you are to be so prosperous and living in the good old USA.

My everyday carry, pocket items include a tactical pen (which writes well, and can punch out automotive windows), a large swiss army knife, and a powerful, tactical pen light. These items dictate that I won't be a helpless victim, without any hope of finding/fighting my way to safety.

I have my CCW, but leave it in the car for most places. I also carry in my car, a "get-home-bag" which includes some short term survival items, and supplies, along with self defense/preservation items including a first aid kit for helping myself/others.

If u think there are victims or are a victim you are delusional. This is America for God's sake the land of endless prosperity. You have absolutely nothing to be worried about or fear...

You should see your M.D. and get some meds they can do wonders for guyz like you.

Sorry for the hijack but I have been looking for multi use window punch, if I may ask what make/model tactical pen do you have?
Thanks

Crazy - a old guy in downtown Portland walked up to a random young man, pulled a sword from a cane, fatally stabbed the stranger in the heart, sheathed the sword-cane and walked away, 2 am, witnesses were around, recorded on surveillance video. He's been arrested.
