It is something to thing about. BUT, the odds of dying in a mass shooting is way less than dying in a car crash. Most of the shootings around here involve a bar, alcohol, testosterone, and or a family member.
The Edmond Post Office shooting (August 20, 1986) is the origination of the phrase "going postal" and just another screwed up individual ready to kill and die for what was only important to him. There is no way to avoid all the crazy people without becoming a hermit and living like Ted Kaczynski living in a cabin in the woods.

Technically speaking Ted Kaczynski did not avoid crazy people...

that being said, I see nothing wrong with avoiding people and especially crowds.
Even if they aren't going to knife or shoot me, they tend to annoy me with great consistency...

Maybe turn off the news? Seriously, that's what I try to do. Despite the doom and gloom, at least per USG statistics definition violent crime is down substantially since the 1990s, both nationally and in OR. The difference today is that you hear about every last little thing thanks to 24 hour news stations and the internet. Baz and Patrick don't have a bad approach here, go sit on the beach or beside a forest stream, stare at the beauty in front of you, and I think you'll feel a bit better.
Or if you like numbers, look here: https://www.ucrdatatool.gov/ By the way, I also frequently carry. But I also have multiple fire extinguishers in my house, yet I can't say I am afraid of fire. Prepared and afraid should be mutually exclusive.

I kind of thought a decent number of people were conceal carrying without a permit and surprised these mass shooters weren't meeting up with some of those people who can return fire.

One must remember we are on a 24 hour, 7 day's a week, minute to minute news cycle. Something bad is happening nation wide or world wide every minute and it's plastered in our faces in a endless gloomy loop. You are immediately force fed doom and disaster every single day.
With as many people there are in the world today, the odds of a maniac tragedy happening are really quite low given the sheer volume of the worlds population. I'm not saying don't pay attention, or be cautious and you should for sure, trust your gut if you get bad vibes. I'm just saying given the amount of scary awful stories, force fed and bombarding you constantly, you can't help but think this is how bad the world is today. In reality its always been this way. We just didn't have it constantly forced in our faces every minute until cable news and the net came along. Local stories stayed local. People get killed every day in auto wrecks but its so normal and boring now its not a big deal. Reading and handpicking the news off the internet is for sure the best way to stay informed and not get sucked into the "anxiety" in my opinion. -WW |

From a quality of life perspective, it's hard not to appreciate living in a state with the toughest gun laws and the lowest firearm death rate in the country.

Shaun, you say that like you think there is some sort of correlation or causation at play. I would still rather live in California, and it is run by America hating, gun grabbing communists.

Regarding the OP, John, have you contacted your elected representatives regarding your concerns? If it is anything like California, it can't possibly improve the situation, but you may feel better about it. Already have the S&W 442 and the the G26

That's why I love living near a small town out in a rural setting. I can drive 45 or 50 minutes to a larger city, see and do what I want then turn around, come home and relax.
Remember, if you let the crazies stop you from doing things you enjoy, they win.

Rather ironically considering the topic of this thread, MA is higher than either KS or OR in both total violent crime and violent crime rate. Actually OR is substantially lower than either of them. KS does have a higher murder rate though, so I've got that going for me! This is all per that DOJ website I posted to, which has data through 2014 that you can create tables from.

Reported violent crime rate in the U.S. in 2017, by state I'm pretty happy never worrying about getting shot. Other than when terrorists are out and about, even then, I feel fairly protected. ![]()
