I've been there a few times and never had any issues although I never left the airport in Belize City. I always took a small plane to Dangriga so I probably never saw the seedy side of Belize. It is a third world country which I become less fond of the older I get.

We spent a week on Ambergris Caye and loved the place. Either snorkeled or scuba dived every day, ate great food,and lounged on the beach. The coral is amazing on the worlds second largest barrier reef.

that allows you to be protected while allowing travel and you do not even have to live in some chithole place
