Replacement speakers for non-bose 2008 987

I've got a 2008 Boxster S RS60 Spyder. I have a non-Bose system. I thought I had the Sound Package Plus, but I am not sure. What's the best (easierst) way to determine that for sure?

I have a speaker on the pass side that's blown (bad foam I'm guessing). I assume I'll therefore be replacing the main drivers. If I've got just the 6.5", then I'll be upgrading to something more like the Sound Package Plus combo (8" and 3") or if I have the Sound Package Plus already, then I assume I can just replace the 8" or is that not correct?

I'd like to improve the sound, but I'm also not prepared to spend $1000 on speakers.

Have you checked Crutchfield? They have pretty good data on most cars. The Bose are 2 ohm I believe but the non-Bose should be 4 ohm. I’ve only ever messed with Bose equipped cars but they have a weird little enclosure in the door panel, so it’s just just a speaker screwed into a panel like some cars.

I’m not for sure on your 987, but on the 986 the base audio was dash speakers with door pockets, and the hifi audio package added door speakers. Almost every 986 had this package but you do occasionally find one with just door pockets in place of speakers.

EDIT: did a little Google to refresh myself, there’s a mid screwed to the door panel and a woofer on the door itself. Lots of info out there on upgrades.

Yeah, the standard is 2 dash speakers and 2 6.5" door speakers (4 total). The upgrade (non-Bose) is 3 dash speakers and 2 8" and 2 3" door speakers (7 total).

It sounds like the quickest and easiest way to determine would be to pop the center grill in the dash to see if there's a speaker under it.

Steve,

Have you checked the option list under the trunk lid?

Can't you just listen to hear if any sound is coming out of that 3rd grill on the dash?

Option code : 490 Sound system ASK is the non Bose upgrade.
It also has speakers behind the driver, just behind them little storage boxes in front of the suspension pillars.
standard does not have that. EDIT, SPyder probably doesn't have these , was thinking Cayman

another way to check is in the frunk , behind the tools holder, you should have an amp there.
standard doesn't have that either.

"Option list under the trunk lid" No, I didn't know there was one.

The speaker has been disconnected because I had a new head unit and amp installed. I'd have to see if it's in place.

The amp was replaced when I bought the car. I would assume they would have told me if there wasn't one to replace, but I could be wrong. They may have just added one. There's just an empty spot in that place now.

Then really all bets are off about what you have to work with.

What head unit did you put in there? The Porsche one on my 987.2 S had the Bose, I think. But it doesn't pick up blue tooth so I can't play music off my phone. Its pretty simple to use so I like the stock radio. Really, that's my only complain

I went with what was at the time the top of the line Pioneer NEX AVIC-8000. 7" touchscreen, GPS, NAV, Apple CarPlay, etc.... I think the current model is a 8201. Now it comes with a backup camera which I added separately.

It does have Bluetooth, and I used that for a while, but I usually just use the hardwire. It keeps my phone charged which is nice since I stream Pandora over my phone into the car. I also use Waze for Nav, so it keeps the phone charged while using the NAV too.

I think I'd have been happy with the sound of the Bose setup, but I'm glad that I've got the BU camera and CarPlay, so ultimately, glad that I went aftermarket.

Thanks Steve. Its something I may plan to do if the stock radio should go south. I still don't really trust Porsche electronics. I hear they are super expensive to replace and most people go aftermarket. By doing so, I may lose some stock features? Hell, there's so much on there I will never use.

Any one know why mfg install 2ohm amps and speakers? My stock nav's touch screen is no longer working on my 4runner. The stock ones are over 1500 bucks. I am thinking about changing it but can't justify spending a couple or three grand on it. I need new speakers because I know a couple of them are blown or maybe just worn. Most aftermarket ones are 4 ohm then amp has to be replace, then there's the factory sub. What a pain? Any thoughts?

I don't think I did anything but gain features on mine. I think the newer PCM 3.0 stuff is pretty comparable to the aftermarket stuff these days, but even if mine had PCM, I think it was 2.0 or 2.1 which was not super impressive.

They may have other options that aren't on their website. I'll also have to poke around in my car and make sure that I've already got the sound package plus. On his website, it says that if you don't, then upgrading isn't quite as bolt-in.

I contacted Rod. I told him that Christmas was not a good time to spend a bunch of money on speakers. He said that the stock speakers are available online fairly cheaply. He's right. I thought it was the standard 6.5" speakers that are online, but it's not, it's the sound package plus 8" door speakers. $70 shipped. I still want an upgrade, but for right now this will get me going again. Then maybe in about 3 months (bonus time) maybe I can upgrade using Rod's budget kit.

Steve, I have blown the 3" speakers on my 08 987 base and replaced them with takeoffs from eBay. They are new, but removed from race cars. I'd like an upgrade so I can have more bass.

According to the dealer in Florida where I ordered these these just fit the Sound Package Plus (ASK490) system. They actually put out decent bass for stock speakers, at least with my system (head unit and amp have been upgraded).
Our host has them, and the price is the same if the shipping is free. https://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/SuperCat/4392/POR_4392_ELGAGE_pg3.htm#item10
I'm guessing that not a lot is different other than the plug, but I couldn't really say.
Quote:
Replacement door speaker woofer. Comes with one speaker, order as needed. Fits on the left or right side door. Sold as a replacement, not as an upgrade. Plug connections are specific for the standard audio system (System 490 ASK), not a plug-and-play upgrade for other audio systems.

Fits the following models with the standard ASK Audio system (option 490):

Boxster - 2005-2012 (987 & 987.2)
Cayman - 2006-2012 (987 & 987.2)
911 Carrera models - 2005-2012 (997 & 997.2)

Best money I spent on my 911 sound system was a Cerwin Vega under seat subwoofer. I use my 6.5 inch Alpine Type R's for highs and mids and let the under seat sub handle the lows. It was an ENORMOUS improvement for $170. You could put in new door speakers and the under seat sub and spend less than $500 for a good sounding system. I'm using a sub $150 JVC head unit to power everything FWIW. I have multiple options for the EQ settings in the head unit or I can customize. I also have sub woofer settings and the CV comes with a remote dial.
