Porsche flat-six engine 1/4 scale model kit — noisy motor?
So, I got my flat six model kit together and it’s working as expected, but the motor is significantly louder than I expected, with a strained “whining” noise. Does this mean that I have something too tight in the drivetrain?
Those of you who have put this model together: does yours sound like this? (Note: I’ve removed the fan housing and some other bits to get a better look at what might be going on) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oa8JsDYVTCs&feature=youtu.be Last edited by CJFusco; 12-28-2018 at 06:55 PM.. |

Sounds like the timing chain tensioners. Honestly, I have no idea.
Spray some silicone into the cylinders. When I was a kid, I think some kids put the ''Visible V8'' together with vaseline as a lube. They never worked well, and they always sounded thrashy. |

That does not sound unusually loud for a plastic model being driven by an electric motor.

Be interested what the compression and leak down figures are??
Sounds like one crank journal is too tight. Bill K

My model makes the exhaust sounds of throttle blips much louder than the mechanical sound of the electric motor drive. Although I find it typical for a plastic geared model with no lubrication to be a bit noisy. Maybe a dab of Vaseline on the gears and bearing journals would help? Since this model required no glue, maybe you could take it apart and make sure the gears are installed in the correct orientation. And there is no binding with the main, rod, cam journals and the valves move freely in the guides.

I don't get it. Why are 7 out of 10 replies idiotic replies? Someone goes to the forum to ask for some help on a plastic 911 engine model and he gets stupid replies. Come on people, we aren't like that when someone asks for help on a real engine. Give the OP a break.

Thank you for the (sincere) replies. I mean, the engine is functioning correctly — all the cylinders are rotating, the valves are opening and closing, the spark plugs are firing in the correct order etc — it’s just a little noisy. Since it took several hours to build, I’m not about to disassemble and rebuild again right now... but maybe it’s something I’ll do down the line.

Serious questions will get serious answers. A toy engine made of plastic and an near infinite reason to sound "funny" will get attempts at humor for replies. Some are funny, some are not so funny, but it is all in fun. No one really cares why his toy does not sound like he though it might. It is a plastic TOY or model of a real engine. Humor or wise cracks and funny replies are the norm to not serious topics, and often to very serious topics as well. There are no real rules, except to not use profanity or pornography.

Carrying on with the unhelpful theme, does this model make any provision for lubrication? Suppose you drilled teeny weeny holes and ran oil lines fed from the sump via a $10 pump? Might need to use teeny weeny beads of silicone sealant and Tri-X lube.

I built the same with my kid. Mine is not quite as loud but neither is it super silent. I think as you suspect that you are hearing the electric motor a bit more than I am, because it is straining to rotate the thing (something a little tight in there)... I don't think I've run mine again since it was built - fun time though.
