my ex father in law bought one new, loaded eddie bauer edition with the 7.3 I believe. My son was hoping to get his hands on it but unfortunately his grandfather went full alzheimers in the last few years and a lot of his property is in very poor shape. The excursion has relatively low miles but he left it outside with 1 or more windows open in the soggy whidbey island weather for quite a long time and it is pretty trashed apparently :-(

I had a 2001 4x4 7.3 Limited. It was awesome. My family got rear ended in it and walked away. Unfortunately it was already impossible to find a good replacement at the price the insurance paid out. It was a great vehicle to take camping, to the snow etc. I would hunt out of it as well and sleep in the back comfortably without folding the second row seats. The only downside was the noise the 7.3 made. I saw a lot more game when road hunting when I switched to a Sequoia.

I picked this one up in Montana I wanted a diesel tow vehicle but couldn't stomach the $$$ they want for the new ones. Its a 2001 7.3 liter 4x4 and yes it is a beast you know you are driving a large vehicle but digging it so far on the drive home to Southern California it average 22 mpg.

Just for laughs I looked these up on Kijiji and found that most of the diesels for sale have upwards of 500,000 km or 300,000 miles on them....
The V-10s seem to be cheap and more plentiful than the diesels and that 7.3 powerstroke sure does command a premium!
Maybe the V-10s are where the re-bodied Excursions come from?

I looked for awhile at Excursions, and finally found the 2004 Limited with a low mileage (135,000 miles) 6.0L diesel that had already been EGR delete, and well taken care of for $14,000. There are many V-10 versions (8-10 MPG) out there, but the fuel mileage is about 1/2 of what my diesel gets, and don't sound nearly as good.

We live on a farm, and constantly pull heavy trailers with large equipment, a 32' camper, or hay wagons, with 100s of bales of hay, and need the 4x4 to get out of, or into the fields/yard without slipping.

City folks can't wrap their heads around why anyone would need such a vehicle, in the same respect that I can't figure out the need for electric hybrids.

Well, I may be joining the club, a buddy has offered me a 2001 V10 Limited, with around 110K on the clock, for less that it is going to cost to paint my old Suburban 2500 4x4. Everything works, but the tires are old and the wheels are ugly. I need to decide which I want to too with.

We often make Costco runs with my daughter and her fiance, and bring along our freind couple as well...plenty of room for groceries after seating 6 people.

Hoping to make mine last for 10-15 years.

Best Tow Vehicle.............

We bought a 2003 turbo diesel Excursion in 2005 that had 23,000 miles on the clock. We (the wife and I) drove it for 10 years, put over 100K on it and still got 3/4 of the price back when I sold it. We used it for trips and to tow a 25ft camper. I never found a hill that it would not accelerate up briskly towing the camper! That thing had tons of room and would get just as good fuel mileage with 6-7 people on board along with their luggage as it would with one or two! In 10 years of ownership, the only thing that needed attention was the turbo that had to be removed and cleaned. We were sitting at a traffic light at one time when a non-attentive driver rammed the back with her Chevrolet Blazer. The Blazer had to be towed while the only damage to the Excursion was a slightly bent rear bumper and door hinge! That thing was just about as safe as anything on 4 wheels! If Ford built them now, they would probably be in the $125-$150K range. Loved that car!

I think the Excursion was basically revived only not as capable as the original in the Expedition XL. I've been looking at the Expy's ever since we rented a GMC Yukon XL to haul 7 people out east to visit my sister. I was amazed that a pig like that got 24 mpg on the highway so I had to start looking into the Expedition.
My biggest problem with the Excursion is, every one I have ever ridden in rode just like my truck. Same can't be said for the Yukon XL or the Expedition XL.
