I bought a used Kurt kinetic road machine for $150 3-4 years ago. Figured I could resell if I didn't use it. Job with long hours there was no way to get enough riding time. Right after I got it Kurt released their inside pod so I could train with power using my phone, that made a huge difference compared to heart rate training.

At the time the kurt app was free to use, let you make your own workouts and included sufferfest rides too. I really liked it and did >10hours per week for two winters. I made a workout plan like the friel book says and did lots and lots of intervals, all different sorts. You really need to learn a lot to do it well, can't do too much intensity or you'll fatigue and need to take a break.

Figured id proven I was trainer material and got a refurbished wahoo kickr. Best thing ever, instead of shifting and pedelling harder for a hard interval the machine just adjust the resistance to get the watts it wants: Pedal fast and resistance is low, pedal slow and resistance becomes high.

I don't regret my time with the kurt but should have got the kickr sooner, for something that is so painful its great to not need to worry about caliberation or wheel slippage or matching the power level, makes indoor riding much more pleasant.

I now drive the kickr with golden cheetah (free open source software) using an old tv and an old tablet. Mostly I do struxtured training but sometimes its virtual rides. Is amazing on a dark stormy night I can feel like I rode up a pass in the alps on a fresh summer morning.

Yeah I much prefer to ride for real but trainer makes sense when it gets dark 4 hours before you get home from work. Also i'm 90 % mountain biker and access is iffy in the winter, the trainer makes great sense.
