BMW 335i
my son bought a 08 335i a while back that had some tranny issues.
he lucked out, I think is was just low on fluid. oh, he paid 4500 for it. long story short, the other night he removed the cats and down loaded a new "tune" for it that upped the boost and changed some other things. let me tell, that thing is FAST. I hate to say it, probably faster than the 930, especially with an automatic. that's a really nice driving car.

A major mistake I made last spring was let my wife trade my '11 335i for a new 328 for her. Be that as it may, the 335 is a vastly underrated car. Really miss mine.
Purely in the FWIW category, these cars performance respond well to mods. The only down side is that reliability drops off at an even steeper slope.

I had one as a loaner for a couple days a few years ago. I'm a bit stunned they sell those to anyone with the money to buy one. its hard to believe that kind of flat vicious acceleration is being driven around by soccer moms and old peoples every day.
agree--remarkably underrated in performance.

They had some really fatal flaws in terms of mechanical failures, which is too bad because they really are great driving cars.

I have a customer with a tuned one. It is definitely faster than my 930.

the high pressure fuel pump issues early on really put people off on the 335's (i was inches from buying one) and it seemed like BMW really screwed up their response.
I think they finally sorted things out, or maybe the aftermarket did, but I know it really hurt the reputation.

I had a 2008 335xi, with the BMW chip that took it to 330 hp, and it was awesome fast and got 28 mpg, but......it loved its CEL, went through 3 HPFPs under warranty, would not keep a front end alignment, and had to be fueled very slowly or it would sputter and buck for 20 miles after fueling.
Finally sold it and bought a 1999 M3.

Yup. Hence why they are cheap.

its deceptively fast due to no lag.
I would consider one for a track car.

Pretty sure that when they went from twin turbo to single turbo, they also changed HPFP and the problem went away. In 4 years and 60,000+ miles, I never had a single issue.

+1 - I have a '08 135i (possibly 135is...still doing some research) and the thing is a blast to drive. Considered selling it a few months back, but couldn't do it.

Apparently a software update back in 2012-2013 fixed the issue for 99% of the N54/55 engines and the problem never was the pumps themselves after all.

Not a 335i, but I have a 335d and love the way it drives and handles. Probably the best driving car I have owned.

How do you get that kind of mileage? I can only manage 34mpg on the highway.

When they first came out, you could mod them and it would keep up with the M3. IIRC, bolts ons would get you to 400hp at the crank.

I'll give another thumbs-up here...I enjoy my 2013 335i coupe quite a bit. Almost 50K miles now with no issues at all. Quite fast too. Feels quicker than my old Audi S4 V8, although published 0-60 times are the same. The single twin-scroll turbo all but eliminates any lag and the motor's very responsive, especially when it's wound up near the 7K RPM redline.

It's amazing what good mileage you can get in anything going 65 or slower. The problem is that on road trips, traffic is going 75-80 on the interstate. I like to cover ground but my Jetta Tdi still gets pretty great mileage at those speeds.
