Those straw hud hotels sitting over clear shalow tropical waters

I have seen them in magazines, TV and such over clearest tropical ocean waters. Due to kids, work, lack of funds , you name it, I have not been able to stay in one of those places. My chance maybe here this summer to cross it off my bucket list. Taking 5 weeks off with kids to see some old stuff in Asia, mainly China. Have all that booked this past Saturday leaving us 10 days in Hong Kong and Macau (want to drive or ride in a bus on the world's longest bridge, not so much for the gambling in Macau)on our own. I Got thinking this morning, why not scratch that off my list and stay an other week? I have not talk with my travel agent yet but my plan is to rest up and slow down for a couple days there since most people in Hong Kong speak English, enjoy local foods then off to one of those hut type hotel in the tropical ocean, but where?

Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, Bali? Coastal, island, I don't care as long as its safe away from political unrest. I'm sure water activities are plenty, but sightseeing or tours are fine with us. I like to get away form the typical American influence but not sure if that's possible. Anyone done it, suggestions? I have 5-6 days left to do just that.

My oldest son did that a few months ago in Thailand. I think he spent $28 a night for the hut.

Look into El Nido Philippines. Easy to get to from where you are. Do an island hopping tour on the Kraken boat.

We didn't stay in one ($1200 a night) last month when we were at SANDALS south coast in Jamaica, but they look very similar to the pictured ones, but we did walk out, and check one out....very cool !

Stop somewhere that has a direct connection to the US on your way back. Tahiti is a little out of the way but good connections.
Hong Kong is a great place to spend time BTW. You can eat local stuff for months. Take the double decker public bus to Stanley Market for a thrill

Logistics can be daunting, but I think the Maldive are doable...easy flight to Europe and then Los Angeles.

This looks good as well:

I have been on an engineering phoncon, so I had some time:

Here is a picture of my "Over the Water Hotel" in the Maldives

I stayed in one on my honeymoon in Bora Bora. Thank God for hotel points otherwise it wouldn't have happened ($$$$$).

It was fun though. Our own private deck, see through floor in a couple places. Worth it if you can swing it.

I agree that those huts look spectacular, but my question has always been, how is the sewage/waste disposed? I know, this takes all the romance out of the equation, but my practical side just won't stay quiet. I certainly hope the waste is not just piped out into the lagoon in its raw state.

Anyone have an answer to this?

I'm an engineer by trade so of course I swam under my hut and looked! At least at the one stayed in, the pipes for electrical and plumbing ran under the elevated walk way back to shore, joining the other huts pipes along the way. There were booster pumps along the way too.
When I was there, they ULTRA protective of the lagoon. You could swim and paddle board but they even had signs asking people not to dump out water bottles into the ocean.

Thanks, good to know. I suspected as much, especially the push to protect the lagoon as that's the locale's bread and butter. I just wondered as in some of the more remote places without too much modern infrastructure, it got me to think a bit.

Don't feel weird, I do that too since I am in the construction business, I often ask that questions. I was out in Death Valley and I wait for the restroom outside of this gift shop, with a little place to eat. It just so happens that the maintenance guy was there fussing with something then I popped the question. Everyone waiting there was making strange faces listening to us.

We stayed in a (OWB..Over Water Bungalow) in Bora Bora when Elissa did a Make A Wish in 2008. We talked to the son of one of the founders of the OWB concept while on the trip and he explained how it all works.
We had no idea what a OWB was till our daughter explained it to the Make A Wish coordinator. The trip was amazing.

They all sound like a ton of money but I have to try and cross that off my list. I think a week maybe too long because there may not be anything to do on a small island. There's so many snorkeling, kayaking, or hiking in 100% humidity one can do. Maybe I should tune it back to 3 night. I hope I can find a place have way home. 14 hours coming back from Asia is a long haul especially after 5 weeks being away. Vacation is never relaxing. Its work especially with a 11 and 13 year old. Wife may be completely piss off at us by the second week, who knows?

Maybe it's just me, but I got a chuckle out of the juxtaposition of "HUD" and "tropical"

OK, I gotta stop thinking about real estate for a little

Maybe I can stay in the Section 8 quarter near shore to save a few bucks?
