I read individual user reviews, and go right down the list. You get a sense of why people who like it, like it, and why the people who hate it hate it.
I can figure out how it skews from that. |

Yeah, that's a bit of the gripe: Rottentomatoes takes the critic's score and decides whether it's a thumbs up or down based on their take on what the critic uses (thumbs up/down, five stars, 4 stars, etc), and only if it seems vague or close will they ask the critic. The issue seems to be that if a lot of critics are conflicted on a film and score towards the middle, it can get a "rotten" score even though the average is the same as something else rated "fresh."

trust the critics much more for: serious movies, dramas, artsy movies etc
But I think the audience rating is much more reliable for comedies and action Side note: I recently subscribed to flic connection on youtube and it has increased my enjoyment of netflix and prime streaming immensely. Makes selecting a good movie so much quicker. I generally like his recommendations https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCT09qC2vwlbJvofZRIdLalg

Of of the totally unreliable ratings is the number of stars a movie is rated on HBO. I tried to watch one that was rated 4 stars, and after 30 minutes I did not care at all for one character, the plot or anything about the movie. I just killed it, and went on. It was so bad it was 100% forgettable.
Of course I feel that way about the Godfather. Too much mumbling and culture I am unfamiliar with. I know it is highly rated, and some people think it is a masterpiece. I would rather see Sharknado again than sit through the Godfather.
