I've decided that the perfect alternative is the Carmel Concours on the Avenue. My car would definitely be suitable for that.

As for being around rich, snooty people, I don't mind. As Herr Detweiller in The Sound of Music says, "I like the way rich people live. And I like the way I live when I'm with them."

OK, in all fairness, I went to a Radwood show last month. About half the crowd dressed in 80's garb. It was a hoot. Probably the most fun I've ever had at a car show. No snootiness--just a lot of fun remembering things that were period correct. The Goodwood Revival also sounds fun.

That Pebble Beach deal is nice, sweet venue and all, but mostly not my crowd. I have more fun at the smaller events. The Elks Lodge up the street does a few a year generally, and there is a group of diverse vehicles at the local Charbucks every Sunday.

Have you ever gone to a Bugorama? I always had fun going to those.

I've not been to a Bugomrama. I've been to the VW show at Kelley Park in San Jose many times but, strangely enough, that's not my crowd. It's mostly young, tattooed gang banger types with badly modified cars. Very few original vintage cars any more.

Yes, Concours on the Ave. would be perfect for your Beetle. There are usually a few VWs in the mix and they always get their fair share of attention. I'm starting to see vintage VWs turn up more frequently among the heavy hitters at other car events too.

The Pacific Grove Rotary Concours Auto Rally might also be worth considering. I've entered my old VWs several times over the years and have even picked up a couple of awards. It's a car show, followed by a cruise along 17-Mile Drive, which all ends up at a BBQ and awards ceremony back in PG.

I totally agree about the current state of the Kelley Park VW meet. Fewer and fewer nicely-restored original cars and more clapped-out, slammed rust buckets sporting 1000 watt sound systems. The crowd is getting to be more like a freak show too...lots of very unattractive people showing up there now. It's the polar-opposite of Monterey Car Week.

It’s a great event and the cars you see there are second to none. I know a guy that restores one per year, just for that event only. I believe that’s all he does.

I generally wear a suit and tie when attending and enjoy every minute of it. If that doesn’t suit you, well, there’s always cars and coffee somewhere. Even Jay Leno forgoes his customary jeans for a suit when he attends. If he can do it, anybody can.

I have a matching pair of 50th anniversary Pebble Beach leather and wool letter jackets for sale, if you happened to miss that year. And I can also sell you a framed event poster, event program, etc. Maserati was the featured marque that year.
I was there that year, 2014?

I only know because it's the last time I went up and it was Maserati that year. My friend sold his Lamborghini Muira at RM for $1.1M, (IIRC), and bought a better one 15 minutes later in the same auction. Good times.

Nope, 2000.

Interestingly, the jackets were made by a family-owned business in the NW US that basically invented the letter jacket. I don't live in Southern CA and have sold off my convertibles, so I have no use for the jackets.
