Am I nuts? Thinking about ordering a new 992 Carrera S.

Is ordering a new model Porsche really a good idea? I keep thinking of 996's and all of the other models that final testing was left up to new owners. The other side of the coin is I just turned 75 and I'd like a few years to enjoy a new Porsche. I'm really interested in the combined wisdom of the Pelican community to help my decision making. Thank you.

TimT 02-04-2019 04:27 PM

No..

Its better than every car you've had before

speeder 02-04-2019 04:40 PM

Richard, if you are 75 and still in good health plus can afford a new 992, why the hell not?

Go for it and give us a full report. As for the first 996 analogy, that was an early water cooled engine and the 992 is a very gentle evolution of what they were making last year and the year before that. :)

MRM 02-04-2019 04:47 PM

You may be nuts, but if you are it’s not because you’re thinking of ordering the new 992. If you have the means I highly recommend it. It is the best of the breed that’s ever been produced. You will not regret the purchase.

stealthn 02-04-2019 05:17 PM

Order a Taycan :)

Bill Douglas 02-04-2019 06:12 PM

I think a new 992 Carrera S is a very good idea.

Disclaimer - anything to do with cars and me is not based on logic :D enjoy!

What color?

pavulon 02-04-2019 06:15 PM

If you can afford it and it's not an impulse purchase, do it tomorrow and reports back!!

Racerbvd 02-04-2019 06:21 PM

Go for it.

Nickshu 02-04-2019 06:26 PM

Do it.

My favorite thing about selling new Porsches back in the day was that when someone is buying one, usually things are going pretty well in their life. It was a pleasant energy to be around. :)

wildthing 02-04-2019 06:32 PM

If I am still legally allowed to drive in 2045, I hope to ask a similar question...

pwd72s 02-04-2019 06:38 PM

Go for it! I'm also 75 and think a guy who has made it as far as we have should find enjoyment where he can.

So, if you think a new P-car would make you happier than you are now, why not?

RKDinOKC 02-04-2019 06:46 PM

Yep, you are 100% nuts. But in a good way. Be sure to order it with all the stuff you like or want, and in the colors you want!

vash 02-04-2019 06:58 PM

I would. I don’t think I made the right choice at the crossroad to get me to a new Pcar when I’m 75.

I’d be lucky to buy yours used. :)

Noah930 02-04-2019 07:12 PM

You're 75. Do it.

porsche4life 02-04-2019 07:32 PM

Do it! If you can spare the change, and it’ll bring you joy... why not?

LWJ 02-04-2019 07:34 PM

Unqualified yes.

For all the reasons above.

And when you break 100 with that s eating grin remember your good friends on PPOT.

911boost 02-04-2019 08:44 PM

Does it come in a manual? Because that would be freaking sweet if you did and bought it

Evans, Marv 02-04-2019 08:54 PM

Yesssssss!!

oldE 02-05-2019 02:17 AM

You know posting here only gets you a conformation bias.

At the very worst, suppose the thing is an absolute pig. You hate it!
At seventy five, how long do you think buyers' remorse is going to last?:D

Drive the wee out of that thing!

Best
Les

Don’t waste another minute. Get it.

MBAtarga 02-05-2019 05:22 AM

Porsche forum members tell other member to go buy a Porsche!

I didn't see that one coming... :)

stomachmonkey 02-05-2019 05:43 AM

I’ll keep it short.

My Opa was told he had to give up his two favorite vices or he’d be dead in a year.

He tried for a couple of months.

Was misearable.

Decided he’d rather live a year happy than two or more not.

Slipped in the shower shortly after.

He never made it the year and it had nothing to do with his vices but he went happy.

onewhippedpuppy 02-05-2019 06:01 AM

Why not? If you’ve got the money and love the car, might as well enjoy it.

glewis80SC 02-05-2019 06:04 AM

Do it.

David 02-05-2019 06:31 AM

YES

I find it funny that the older I get, the more I think about how many more cars I'll own and what they should be. Honestly, you starting thinking: I'll maybe buy 4 more cars, then 3, then..
If you're a car guy/girl it really makes you think. When I make the decision to buy perhaps the last new fun car I buy, it will be something very special.

Of course in 10 years you'll be asking us: should I buy the new 995?

Buyer signed the contract on the ranch we are selling in Colo. I'm gonna order as soon as we close. Not sure about color and still debating 7 speed or pdk. Prefer the manual but I wonder if my leg wouldn't be happier with the auto in a few years. Thanks for all th reinforcement. I've owned Porsches since 1971 but never a new one. I'm excited!

And you get a new car warranty on the P car. Wow:)

recycled sixtie 02-05-2019 09:49 AM

At 72 I am not far behind you and would consider another Porsche(probably used) in the next two or three years. Having said that my wife has a dibs on another car first as her 2002 Camry should be replaced and will likely get an suv.

Yes if you can afford it go for it!:) Life is for living.

pete3799 02-05-2019 10:07 AM

Get it......and be sure to post some pictures of it.

Then it's an easy decision: go for it! Enjoy it in great health!

I'm also 75. Used to be strictly a manual trans car guy. But today? Well, every time I drive some miles of a major arterial into the city of my favorite pool hall? Find myself wishing the car had an automatic. 1/2 hour or more of stop & go will do that to ya. Well, it does to me anyway.

Personally, I was done with P-cars a little over 10 years ago...but if a new one will make you happier than you are now, by all means go for it. I consider a newer car from time to time, asking myself if I'd be any happier than now. The answer is "probably not", so I hang onto the money. Soon enough, I guess my daughter or wife will appreciate that.

Zeke 02-05-2019 10:45 AM

Someone, somewhere has to buy new Porsches.

That is so cool. The choice of transmission is the only bugaboo - my heart says manual, my brain says pdk.

Enjoy.

fxeditor 02-05-2019 03:23 PM

You'd be nuts not to! :)

Shaun @ Tru6 02-05-2019 03:33 PM

Of course you should get one.

Transmission choice. A manual will keep you young. A PDK will make you old.

greglepore 02-05-2019 03:41 PM

Naw. PDK is the ultimate gearbox. Auto when you want, manual when not.

pavulon 02-05-2019 04:08 PM

The manual should be less trouble to rehab in 20-30 years. The PDK would make ownership most enjoyable. Driving a good DCT is satisfying in a way that manuals can't be.

jorian 02-05-2019 06:06 PM

Do it. You've obviously earned it.

One of my clients said to me recently, "If you don't fly first class, your kids will."
