Astrophotography and my Exploding Meteor

Cold and Crisp clear nights with no moon made me pull out the good lens.

https://www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Sony/Sony-FE-70-300mm-F45-56-G-OSS-mounted-on-Sony-NEX-7__736

Sony A6300 body, 25 meg pixel. and a Sony $1200 70-300mm OSS optically stabilized lens on the APS-C sensor is equivalent to a 100-450mm zoom.

Tripod Pointed at Orions' Belt and several seconds of shutter speed........I got lucky.

I captured A FREAKIN' FRIGGEN' COOL SHOT OF AN EXPLODING METEOR.

4 second exposure, ISO 20000, F5.6

A tight Crop of the image, shows clearly as it entered the atmosphere and exploding, then the tumbling starts with it slowly breaking up in pulsing fashion.

here is 15 second exposure, ISO 6400 F4.5 The Orion Nebula is clearly visible as the smudge below the belt. google: M42 images.

Way cool. Mind if I share with our planetarium director at work? He's one of the Star Gazers that "replaced" Jack H. (James Albury)

I d love to share native uncompressed Jpgs.

About 16 meg each.

I have a challenge for your Planetarium Director.

"how long is the asteroid trail'?

We have time. 4 seconds

We have measurable length.

We have Orion Belt , with Arc Seconds of a baseline of distance.

I could do this equation 30 years ago. I loved Physics and Calc.

So pelican enginerds

how long is the trail?

bring it. I'm dusting off my physics book.

Anyone want the Native JPG files... PM me your email addy.

I'm surprised that you haven't gotten an answer. But, here's an answer that I think is probably pretty close. I didn't do the math because that sounds like a huge pain in the rear. What I did do was a visual estimate of the path using Stellarium.

Stellarium using my visual estimate says the streak in your photo is 0° 39' 42.55". I suspect we could round that up a bit and still be save, so probably 39-40 mins.

In case the rest of you don't see the relationship between my pic and his, I "star-hopped" and lined up using the circled stars which you can see in his photo.

And apparently, to get a photo that cool, you usually have to have a satellite!

Such great photos. I'm very happy you caught that shot. Fantastic work!

Curious to see how the length is calculated.

I think you need distance away from earth to do this or the speed of the collision.
