Boston to Halifax Nova Scotia

I would like to fly to Boston then rent a car and drive up to Halifax. Has anyone made this trip?

Lol!

Actually not a bad idea to get there by water part way. Taking a ferry would be an interesting way to see the maritimes.

I have made that trip by car...from Boston to Nova Scotia. Up the coast through NH and Maine. Then inland up to Bangor. From Bangor to Calais into New Brunswick to Saint John...onto Monkcton..to PEI...ferry to New London...to Turo..then to Halifax..out to Digby for the ferry to Saint John...

Then we went straight up NB to Fredrickton..over the top down the n side of the Saint Lawerence seaway...to Quebec...onto Montreal..then down through VT. and NH to Boston.
.about 2000 miles

On another trip flew into Boston and onto Halifax airport..rented a car and went up to Sydney on the east coast of NS. Visited the fortress at Louisberg.. You could take the more scenic and slower route along the S shore of NS...Time was a factor for me..so I when by the quicker inland route.

You can take a car ferry from Boston to Halifax..i thought that would be neat and quicker than driving all the way.

I liked NS and Quebec city. Montreal not so much. I prefer Toronto..have been there several times. Driving from Port Huron in MI...visited Nigara Falls on the CA side.

Also have flown into Seattle and driven to Anacortes ferried through the San Juans stayed on Orca..then to Victoria. BC..Then up to Niemo crossed by ferry to N Vancouver and went on up to Whistler..Back to Vancouver and Seattle.

I also have flown from Seattle to Victoria..it was quicker..rented a car ..commuter plane from Victoria stopped in Port Anglese for customs.

So I have bounced around CA a bit. I like the country.

Straight driving would be about 11 hours. Best day to do it would be a Sunday to avoid traffic. Traffic is only heavy from Boston to Portland Maine.
You can take route 9 from Bangor to Calais, it is a single lane road. Or take I-95 to Houlton, and it will be divided Hwy to Halifax. Either route takes the same amount of time. Lots to see in Nova Scotia.

There is no ferry from Boston to Halifax. There is a seasonal catamaran from Bar Harbour, Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and an all year round ferry from Saint John, New Brunswick to Digby, Nova Scotia. Given the lack of traffic in eastern Canada, I would just drive.

If you need any specifics, PM me. I work in tourism.

There was a Lobster buffet in Turo at one time. $12 USD all you could eat...everything was homemade including the mayo. The guy had a friend in New London that sold him 1 pound Lobsters that he would cut in half. I could eat about 7 1lb Lobsters. It was held in some kind of civic organizations club house where the card tables had plastic checkerboard table cloths.

The up in Sydney while driving around a residential neighborhood I found a guy who was selling his Lobster catch out of his garage. Mostly live, but he had a few cooked. 5.5 lbs of Lobster for 18 USD . Went to the grocery bought some rolls, coleslaw and to the govt liquor store for some beer. I broke those Lobsters up into tiny pieces back at the motel I was staying at... Journeys End. The room smelled of Lobster when I was done.

My wife and I drove from Maryland to St. Stephen last year to pick up a trailer and two of these things:

We are redesigning the body for the company.

Anyway. We took I-95 north and thought we would enjoy the coastal route scenery so we got off 95 and took Rte 1 north at Brunswick.

The road was enjoyable, sort of - trees block any real view but the small towns are neat. We were under a bit of a time crunch so we didn't take any side trips.

We decided to take Route 46 north at Orland to Route 9. Much more enjoyable vistas as the elevation and scenery changes.

We stayed in Calais and met the Hoot folks in Saint Stephen. Saint Stephen is a cool place and we wish we would have stayed there.

That is as far as we went and turned around the next day. We took Route 9 all the way into Bangor and enjoyed it more than the coastal route.

Halifax is a wonderful city, btw. I spent time there with the RCAF and Navy and did two Air Shows at Shearwater.

Is their a ferry between anywhere in Rhode Island (Providence, Newport, Port Judith, etc) to Nova Scotia? I would assume given the miles, it might be an overnighter.

I am not aware but not a big traveler.

I took the Portland to Yarmouth ferry called the Cat (catamaran) last fall.

The thing hauls ask. I am guessing 45-50mph (mariners forgive me).

Spendy though. Pal with pickup truck, race trailer and me dropped about $750 one way. Five-six hours.

Pick a nice day (flat seas). Looks awesome.

+1

Barmaid said it ain't always this flat.

Ferry back from Newfoundland to Nova Scotia was just catching winds from Florence(?) two+ weeks prior and seas were not pretty.

Ferry was shut down for two outbound legs (24 hours) and fifty million moose hunters wanted to get home.

Rough ride. Not "Perfect Storm" caliber, but damn. Had to hold onto bunk sides to not roll out.
