My friend just got the 2k2 silver wrx, just like yours except without the spoiler. He got a great deal, a lil over 23k OUT THE DOOR! Too bad the whole time we drove around during spring break, he was still under 1k miles (no redlining or going over 4k rpms). However, under 4k, that car is still a beast. I'm not sure if i could stand the sound of the turbo spooling up all the time.

Yeah, they are...until you screw up the carbs, which I did.

Now I'm paying for it. But at least I got a synchronizer, timing light, and dwell meter out of the deal.

OH GOD, that is the only downside. I HATED synching the carbs on it. Ever had to re-jet it? The guy who owned it before me was from Colorado, he drove it here and never re-jetted it for the altitude.

No, I disassembled the carbs and dipped 'em about 1.5 years ago. Bench synched them, put 'em back on the bike, and it never ran on more than 3 cylinders after that. Turned out one of the intake manifold boots was leaking. Hence way too lean a mixture to fire cyl #2. Finally got new boots last week, put 'em on, and now I have to actually baseline again and then synch the carbs. Not looking forward to it, but the damn thing has been sitting in the garage for 3 years now and I'll be damned if I'm gonna let it sit any longer! At least it'll fire up and run on all 4 cylinders. Though it won't run off-choke.

I'm going to have to re-jet, probably, because I'm using individual foam pod filters instead of the OEM airbox. The old airbox is in real crap shape and a new one is nearly $200. Haven't tried to find a decent used one. Maybe I should...

If you dont use the stock airbox, the bike will never run right. You need that restriction on there, something about the flow pattern goes off when you run pods. I did the same thing to mine and the bike always ran lean no matter what i did. Free flow intake will not work on these bikes. Also, you need to get a vacuum synchronizer. It's the only way to get them spot on. If you look at the intake runners, you will see the ports for the vacuum syncrhonizer. They are capped off. get the caps off and buy some adapters. run the bike up to 3500 RPM and adjust til all the carbs are pulling the same amount of vacuum.

I met an old Japanese bike mechanic at my local Honda dealer who taught me more about this bike that i ever wanted to know. If you have anyquestions, let me know.

Get the stock airbox on there. You may be surprised at how well the bike runs. One more thing, periodically remove the valve adjustment caps and clean the threads/ put some anti-sieze on them. I used to break these stupid things all the time.

Try these guys for used jap bike parts. They have a HUGE boneyard full of these bikes. http://www.tricountymotorcycles.com/ I guarantee you they will have whatever you are looking for.

Thanks. The way I figure it, it was running "OK" at one point with 0 filtration (I took the box off at one point to clean it). The intake honk was cooool. So if I can even get it back to that level I'll be happy.

I have a vac synchronizer; it's the gauge type (mercury scares me). I figured out how I'm going to go about starting the synch process but it's been a drag noodling out the intake leak and then making the decision to spend the $60 on new boots. Was afraid I had mis-diagnosed an ignition problem or something. Thanks for the tip on the boneyard--I just hit them up for a quote on an airbox.

They are good guys there. The'll set you right. What you will need to do is take the seat off, run fittings for longer fuel lines for the tank, the suspend the tank off and above the bike to keep it running. I cant remeber what the exact vacuum reading is off the top of my head though. Ther eis one thing you may want to look for that could throw it off. Where the upper thottle cable attaches to the linkage, there is a hole that eventually wears out of round. This can throw offf your throttle, giving you slop in the grip and might make adjustment a little hard.


When you do the synch, turn the idle stop all the way in until you get to the right RPM to synch them up. I'm pretty sure it's 3500RPM.
