A legend of my youth has passed
Bart Starr, gone at 85. I know many have other teams, but the Green Bay Packers of my young days were inspirational. When we moved to California from Wisconsin in 1963, my nine year old self looked to them to get me through the adjustment.
The kids in our new neighborhood gave me a lot of grief (you know, the typical stuff), but it was the Packers lead by Starr who gave me the solace to know that not being a surfer was ok. It was the days of the Rams (Roman Gabriel, just pre fearsome foursome), the Cowboys and the Browns. His passing hits like my Dad's, kinda reminds us that our youth is in the shadows of the past. Rest in Peace Bart Starr thank you for the great games that my Dad, brothers and friends enjoyed. God Bless your family. https://sports.yahoo.com/packers-legend-5-time-champion-bart-starr-dies-at-age-85-153139097.html

Bart Starr was the best representative of the Packers organization for the past 60 years. My condolences to his family and friends. Rest In Peace, #15.

Very cool.
The Rams in that era (I lived in SoCal and was a 49'ers fan - eek!) were so compelling: Dick Bass, Jack Snow, Pardee, Irv Cross, etc. that being a 49'er fan was a question of family ties not who was cooler. Like Staubach, there is just something about Starr that was different. RIP, Mr. Starr.

I grew up in Minnesota in the '60s and '70s as a diehard Vikings fan, (which is a tough road to follow in life), but I agree w everyone else that he was a genuine sports legend and the GBP were almost always a great team.

Bart graduated from the same high school that I did. Strangely enough when he played for our high school they won the state championship. I got to see him walking down the hall at my high school. I was just a kid and he was really OLD to us punks.

RIP. Five NFL championships in a 10 year period, for the team that has won more NFL championships than any other.

Forrest Gregg punched out last month also.
I liked Bart Starr's picture, the Ridell helmet with one bar. Kind of reminds me of Niki Lauda for some reason. |

Nostalgia...
My brothers and friends and I always pretended to be Packers when we were in elementary school. No one had the nerve to pretend to be Starr. Everyone but him. One of the things I remember most is from about 3rd or 4th grade... a few kids had toy plastic GBP replica football helmets. I remember borrowing and wearing them at different times when we played tackle football in our school clothes at recess. Whatever we wore to school, that is what we played in. Lots of grass stains and lots of concussions. Don't remember any broken arms or legs. Things were different then.
