Just watched one of my closest friends on 60 minutes talking about the Navy in Pacific theater. Fun to watch some real world flight ops as well. Was nice to see some straight talk, and glad out country has leaders like him....

The F 105 has a special place in my heart. My uncle flew 78 missions in Viet Nam in “Mr Toad”

An English model maker recreated the aircraft perfectly in a 1:72 scale model.

It was the only aircraft at the time that could sustain supersonic flight without an afterburner.

Sadly “Mr. Toad” was shot down after my Uncle PCS ed. The pilot ejected safely and was rescued.

Kinda odd? never heard that before about the Thud.
I mean its a slick plane without bombs or pylons.. but it still only has 14,300 lbf (64 kN) dry thrust. And its a big heavy plane.

Supercruising planes are well known and documented..
the F104 did Mach 1.05 on dry thrust after getting the J79 engines that came out in 1955
The F104 was about as slick as it gets..Empty weight is almost half of the Thud...

I would think a Thud can do it in perhaps a shallow descent.. but level flight???

I’ll double check with my uncle. . . Pretty sure it had a J75. I’ll Double check.

You are correct. You could get to supersonic in the Hun (F-100) but pulling it out of burner made it decelerate to subsonic. That ability of the Thud was our famous Mig avoidance maneuver. They couldn't pull the burner out unless slowing to subsonic or the engine would quit!

but That does not imply the Thud would remain supersonic in level flight either.
The Hun had less margin, mach 1.4 top speed
Thud was mach 2.1

I would think it would bleed speed just as well in mil power, but it would take longer to drop to subsonic?

Bugging out with speed was not unique to the Thud or any particular plane.
All 4th gen fighters did high speed bug outs.. Even Tomcats would use that if ACM started becoming unfavrable and the enemy was gaining angles on them during dissimilar training.

Bug out and fight another day is better than getting greased.
