Stijn, Dantilla, thanks for feedback and insights. I'll check out the Air Safety Institute site.

Well, i'm not a pilot myself, I just like the way they present the cases.. its aimed at educating others from making those mistakes.. no hype, no unnecessary speculation..

Guns were Hoser’s game in the air; he flew the four-gun Crusader – which many Navy pilots still regard as the [deleted] machine of all time- in Southeast Asia, and he’d never been forced to rely totally on missiles like his Navy Phantom cohorts. After negotiations that would shame the pro football draft, Hoser was dragooned back into the Tomcat front seat as a RAG guns instructor. This, after personal entreaties from the highest levels up and including Secretary of the Navy John Lehman, himself a Reserve naval aviator.

His book is great.. any time I feel a bit down, I'll read it and be laughing my ass off.
His antics are legendary.

For instance, CO at some base, he was hunting for slugs in the pistol range, to shoot seaguls with a slingshot.
the base police took offence, and told him to knock it off or else.

So Hoser went into the offense and started reporting the base police for speeding violations and what not.. basically got under their skin so bad that he ended up getting permission to to the shooting range, to fetch his slugs with permission

Another time there was a rule about wearing a belt at all times.
Base police gave him crap about it , so now Hoser shows up at briefings wearing a belt around him... Guys, gotta read the regs, y'all are in violations.. a belt must be worn AT ALL TIMES.

During Vietnam he'de come blazing through the marshal stack in full AB with a test SAM warning blasting through the radio channel..

or how he did the absolute best **** Hot Break ever, in a Crusader, in idle..

The book is full of stuff like that. Find it Buy it, Enjoy it

Just watched one of my closest friends on 60 minutes talking about the Navy in Pacific theater. Fun to watch some real world flight ops as well. Was nice to see some straight talk, and glad out country has leaders like him....

He's quick to throw other pilots under the bus, while insinuating he's a super pilot that can do no wrong.

The F 105 has a special place in my heart. My uncle flew 78 missions in Viet Nam in “Mr Toad”

An English model maker recreated the aircraft perfectly in a 1:72 scale model.

It was the only aircraft at the time that could sustain supersonic flight without an afterburner.

Sadly “Mr. Toad” was shot down after my Uncle PCS ed. The pilot ejected safely and was rescued.

The THUD! What a bird!

Funny quote:
"The aircraft's offensive capabilities were sarcastically referred to as a "Triple Threat"—it could bomb you, strafe you, or fall on you."

Kinda odd? never heard that before about the Thud.
I mean its a slick plane without bombs or pylons.. but it still only has 14,300 lbf (64 kN) dry thrust. And its a big heavy plane.

Supercruising planes are well known and documented..
the F104 did Mach 1.05 on dry thrust after getting the J79 engines that came out in 1955
The F104 was about as slick as it gets..Empty weight is almost half of the Thud...

I would think a Thud can do it in perhaps a shallow descent.. but level flight???

RNajarian 03-22-2023 11:39 AM

I’ll double check with my uncle. . . Pretty sure it had a J75. I’ll Double check.

Hot Blooded!

Performance

Maximum speed: 1,210 kn (1,390 mph, 2,240 km/h) / Mach 2.1 at 35,000 ft (10,668 m)
Combat range: 676 nmi (778 mi, 1,252 km)
Ferry range: 1,917 nmi (2,206 mi, 3,550 km)
Service ceiling: 48,500 ft (14,800 m)
Rate of climb: 38,500 ft/min (196 m/s)
Time to altitude: 35,000 ft (10,668 m) in 1 minute 42 seconds

RNajarian 03-22-2023 07:26 PM

Here is the reply from my uncle regarding if an F 105 could maintain supersonic flight without an afterburner . . .

You are correct. You could get to supersonic in the Hun (F-100) but pulling it out of burner made it decelerate to subsonic. That ability of the Thud was our famous Mig avoidance maneuver. They couldn't pull the burner out unless slowing to subsonic or the engine would quit!

svandamme 03-23-2023 04:50 AM

eeuh, bit ambigious?

"They couldn't pull out the burner.."

but That does not imply the Thud would remain supersonic in level flight either.
The Hun had less margin, mach 1.4 top speed
Thud was mach 2.1

I would think it would bleed speed just as well in mil power, but it would take longer to drop to subsonic?

Bugging out with speed was not unique to the Thud or any particular plane.
All 4th gen fighters did high speed bug outs.. Even Tomcats would use that if ACM started becoming unfavrable and the enemy was gaining angles on them during dissimilar training.

Bug out and fight another day is better than getting greased.

Could you ask this specific question

Did the F105 , maintain Supersonic speed in MIL, in Level flight, indefinately (fuel permitting) ?
