^^^ In helo school in the Navy, we shoot a lot, at least we used to, full autos to a spot. Even with a functioning engine, a small jet in the Bell, there is a point were the aircraft is committed to the power-off landing.

I had a really great instructor, Major Cipriani, a USMC Cobra pilot.

He had a mantra for the end of every auto: On the flare, you pull, you pause and you Cipriani, meaning relax, Cipriani, level the nose and use the rest of your main rotor turns to land.

I can still hear him.

I saw the sad news about a family going down in their Mitsubishi MU2-B in weather in Columbia County, NY over the weekend. I recall these MU2-B's as being a difficult plane for non-professional pilots and they had a pretty terrible record back in the 70's and 80's. I haven't seen much of them in recent years. Anyone else have thoughts on the old turboprops?

Old aircraft aren't the problem. The Mu-2 does not have ailerons, and it's a seriously fast ac. It did have issues, but they quickly figured out it was due to pilot proficiency in this particular airframe. Since then insurance companies have made type training and proficiency mandatory for those that operate them.
I will be surprised if this accident is a result of anything other than poor crm/decision making... which is to say i doubt it will be a proficiency issue. A friend has one and he loves everything about it except it's looks, he went through the training and he said it made all the difference and felt safe flying it.
Sadly he has passed.... unrelated to aircraft. He will be missed.

All the good/most pertinent stuff is from 7:30 on if you don't want to take the time to watch it all.
