Ground was broken today! Had a great person, "Kathy" at Advance Auto Parts pulls off the unthinkable. She found the sale, but it took time, maybe 30 minutes. No less than 4 store Mgrs, and 1 corporate officer tried, but failed. She did it, and I spoke with her superior afterwards in high praise.

Rear ball joints? I’ve worked on more Boxsters than I can count and have never replaced one due to wear. Maybe boots are torn?

The axles are unfortunate. Many guys aren’t willing to stand behind their work rebuilding these and for sure re-booting front axles is foolhardy because they are under more stress and might come back “clicking.” I would do boots on a rear axle for the type of tear you describe but with additional labor it comes close, especially if it’s not a manual trans. I’m not sure if we would warranty it for the same amount of time though.

Another issue that affects even low mile Boxsters are noisy rear wheel bearings, so maybe you got lucky there..

I could be wrong, but I don't think the boots are torn. I was under the car not that long ago and had a look around. That's how I knew about the boot. It's a 6spd 2008 Boxster S w/45k miles.

It's amazing how places will rip you off. A local stealership does it right to your face. My wife had the tire pressure monitor light go off. I thought I'd take it to the local dealership. They told me they charged $100 to check them out. The place I bought the tires at took care of it for nothing.

Funny thing about most dealerships, Porsche in particular. They sell absolutely nothing anyone needs from a product standpoint. People do seem to need honesty and integrity though; once word spreads people will beat a path to your door.

I imagine in some markets like SoCal, there’s and endless supply of uninformed customers willing to part with money no questions asked. I would certainly call the GM first and then someone at PCNA (field service manager) to voice a complaint if the TPMS event noted above happened to me....

The area is ok...but we were only moving to be close to our first granddaughter...due in November. The house was about 4 blocks away and we payed a premium for it because of that (sales are rare in the area and go quick...which is why we bought so early). I guess we will just vacation there a couple of times and then rent it out (and stay here for now). My daughter's upcoming east coast work assignment is only for a year...and then she goes somewhere else...but, she does not know where yet. I guess that changes make life exciting.

X2. Agree. I think I'd be more PO'd at the manufacturer for making a car that had that much stuff go wrong with only 40K miles. It's fairly well documented that European cars in general are expensive to buy and even more expensive to keep. Sorry you're having so much trouble (and expense). It ain't fun.

The car's been pretty trouble free for 5 years. I'm not surprised about some stuff, because the car is 11 years old and rubber/plastic doesn't last forever, especially in our heat.

It is what it is. I still love the car.

OK, I got my car back. It seems to be good. The pedal effort for the clutch is lighter than it was originally, but I suspect that's just due to it having a different pressure plate.

When they gave me the initial estimate, it was "we can do it for ~3000" (they gave me an itemized with more specific dollar amounts).

The one estimate was something like $600 for clutch and pressure plate and then 1100 for the flywheel. The other estimate was $1100 for the clutch, pressure plate and flywheel. It seemed odd to me. They said it was a kit which also seemed odd. My cynical side also wondered if since they couldn't sell me on the "you need $1500 worth of new ball joints in the rear" they decided to throw some new charges on the bill to make up for the "loss", but I'm going to give them the benefit of a doubt and assume they made a mistake versus being crooked.

Then last Wed they called and said "we received the parts today, but not all of them. The rest of the parts will be delivered on Mon, so your car won't be ready on Fri, it'll probably be ready next Tue or Wed."

That was irritating, but it is what it is. They'd already had the car for 2 days.

When I got there today, they said, "it turns out that the kit didn't come with the pressure plate, so we had to order that, but we gave it to you at our cost." ($375) The itemized receipt shows a "Sachs clutch kit $375" and a "Porsche Clutch/flywheel Assembly $1077."

I assume they thought the "clutch/flywheel assembly" was all 3 parts and they were wrong and had to order a clutch when they discovered that they'd screwed up. They didn't tell me about the increase in price or mistake until I picked the car up.

I'm certainly not going back, which is a shame, they were good for the set of tires that I bought from them.

I did see the parts, and it did look like they replaced everything. The throw-out bearing was definitely bad. I can't say for sure about the flywheel. I saw it move side to side, but I'm not sure if it was more or less the 15mm and I'm not sure if it sprung back. Either way, everything is new now. The clutch disk wasn't worn down to the rivets which was good.

Dual Mass flywheels aren't supposed to be resurfaced. They are two part affairs that move axially with respect to each other.

This vehicle (I bought it 6 years old with 21k miles) has always had an issue so that if you pulled away from a stop just right (or is it "just wrong") there would be a little shudder from the clutch. I'm now starting to think that there's always been some sort of minor issue in that area.
