Anyone drive an older Ford Ranger - Suspension Questions
I bought a 2011 Ford Ranger. I like the looks and I'm able to haul just about anything. But, I was really surprised how terrible the suspension is; the truck rocks back an forth when exiting a driveway and the rear hops whenever you hit potholes. It's a 2wd XLT and has coil suspension in the front.
That said, I installed new Bilstein shocks and it made no difference (even though the orig shocks were pretty shot). I have purchased but not yet installed new rear leaf springs and front/rear sway bars. I'm just wondering what other Ford Ranger owners have experienced and is this what the truck was like when it was new. Granted, I'm use to driving Porsches but this suspension is pretty bad. The truck has 108k miles and is otherwise in excellent condition. |

I just sold my 2wd 2004 Ranger last year. It had 160K miles on it. I never thought the suspension was lacking at all...but my Ranger had the Edge package. Not sure what all the difference that made.
Sure..sometimes the rear end would break loose over bumps or potholes, but I never carried weight in the back until winter came. Absolutely needed the extra weight in the snow. I would give it some time. Rangers have other good qualities that grow on you.

I've got a 2000 Ranger 4x4.
Neighbor was moving to the East coast, said he'd be thrilled to get 1000 bucks for it just so he wouldn't have to deal with shipping it. Rear end hops around over anything less than smooth surfaces, and put any weight at all in the box, and the headlights are pointing at the sky. This one has well over 200,000 miles, and the Ranger is Ford's cheap truck line, so I forgive its inadequacies. Perfect truck to leave at a trailhead when hiking/backpacking. Get back to the trailhead, and... Bummer. It's still there. Nobody stole the little beater. |
