my supply of fresh OJ is getting low...

flatbutt 03-17-2020 03:06 PM

I've been eating fresh as much as I can saving the frozen stuff for when or if... My local Acme is keeping up pretty well but out of towners have been staging raids.

I just panic bought a new windshield wiper arm.

On an old VW you can just laboriously pick the metal shavings out of the grooves & re-install... but not fer this luxury sports car!

Yep. I was wondering the same thing. I'm cynically foreseeing tons of uneaten food thrown away and unused. I hope I'm wrong.

2 days ago: paper product shelves, pasta shelves were empty, and some soups/canned goods shelves were decimated. Same chain today: lots of everything in stock.

Everyone was Kung Flu fighting
The News was causing the rioting
In fact, it was a little big frightening
Been days since a toilet paper sighting...

Ever hear of a freezer? Or fridge?

Bread freezes well. I doubt bananas do.
I make two loaves of bread at a time, cut them both in half, and freeze 3 halves. When thawed they are nearly the same as fresh.

scored some green bananas and good baking potatoes today. Time to hit the Basil Hayden

Since our pantry and freezer are pretty well stocked, we actually may not have to make a grocery run for a couple of weeks or more. So I'm hoping we might pretty much miss out on the crowds. Some of the stores around here have time dedicated to senior citizens in the mornings, so I might use that time if I have to do some shopping. Were also planning on a couple of trips to our favorite spots in the local desert for camping. There shouldn't be too many people out there.

Was in our local Meijers today. Crowds were thinner than usual..same items gone, due to hoarders.
Funny part was...they used duct tape to form large X's on the floor of every checkout aisle!
A worker said.."That's where you are supposed to stand" (6 ft. radius)

Well, if I had five chickens and five loaves of bread and a only enough space in my freezer for either / or, guess which one ends up in the trash?

Don't be surprised if your surgery gets cancelled/postponed.

I'm NOT - REPEAT NOT an MD, but rotator cuff surgery sounds elective. I'd wait till the coming corona wave subsides before heading to the hospital. I will be doing exactly that myself.

Yes, Yes, and YES.

Also, the virus does not hide in plain sight.

Surgery went well.
Thanks for the concern.
So far, everything at the local hospital is "business as usual".

Went to the local major supermarket and the shelves were empty. Then I went to the small family owned market and they were fully stocked even had tons of toilet paper. I guess the little store is better at inventory control than the large chains.

Ah, Balboa Island (Newport Beach, CA) frozen bananas dipped in chocolate like an ice cream bar were (and guess still are) a famous staple of the island.

Just got home from shopping for my Mom.

Store was stocked with everything needed and more.

Exception was PT and TP and commercial breads.

They did have plenty of fresh bread & baked goods from their bakery.

I talked to the manager and he said the commercial bread would be in tomorrow (they don't deliver on Wed.). He also said the bread companies were going to reduce the number of varieties they normally make and make more of the core assortment.

The produce department was jammed full, including bananas. The produce guy said he was worn out from all the extra business they're getting and related work he's had to do. I told him that's not a bad problem to have. :)

If you multiply them by 3.14 you get pie :D

Aerkuld 03-18-2020 11:54 AM

We stocked up earlier in the year and have a three of cases of cab, three or four cases of champagne, probably 100 bottles of assorted reds and whites, a good spirits selection, and enough Scotch to last twenty years. We may run low on mixers, but I'm not too worried.

Grocery stores were NUTS last weekend, but since the entire Bay Area has been issued a shelter in place order as of Monday, it seems to have eased off. My wife stopped in at Trader Joe's on her way back from work this morning (no shelter in place for medical) and said it was all relatively normal, not many people, and full shelves. Maybe people staying at home will help calm things down to some extent.

Today’s kind of a sucky day for a cold treat, but now you’ve got me craving for that! Come back sunshine!
