Patina ????

In the car hobby is there no more over used term than "patina".???I think it must be somehow be code for "old and tired -crappy cosmetics" And who pays extra for it?
This term and of course "barn find " amongst others are pretty worn out.

Guys are starting to spend money to add rust to classic vehicles.

I'm also occasionally on an old truck forum, and every time someone finds a truck with "Nice patina" my first thought is it needs a paint job.

+1! Most overused, and incorrectly used, word in the car world. Look at early 911 steering wheels. Guys are paying $500 for for old pitted Momo's wheels with dried and cracked leather.

Patina originally defined specifically to copper's return to green. Patina IS the green on copper, during copper's process or returning to it's natural state. How the heck can rotting leather on a steering wheel be called "patina". I see now that some dictionaries have included the general term to relate to anything old and charming….A euphemism.

I have some super cool old work boots with excellent "patina". They must be worth a fortune!

What Craig said - at a minimum I'd expect it to apply to metal. Coins, old instruments and tools etc. can have patina, maybe even a magnesium valve cover or an exhaust tip, but not paint, not leather etc.

I drive my cars. And I enjoy them. Even if they have entered a "collector bubble". And at the end of the day, I believe there is demand for cars that can be driven and enjoyed. The driver. Cars that are not relegated to a collection with Tommy Bahama polishing his investment with a diaper. Cars that don't have such low mileage that you always worry about a declining investment, each time you back it out of the garage. I'd rather have a nice, mechanically sound driver with patina [caugh]nicks, scratches, and dings[caugh], than something I worry over constantly! I don't know about charging a premium for it, but Alex, I will take Patina for $200!

I can appreciate a nice patina on almost anything I'm not planning to eat. But you cannot add patina. It is a natural process that takes time. An object with patina has earned it by surviving the ravages of time. This makes it rare, and therefor interesting. "Added patina" is just a crappy paint job.

I saw a Cadillac (probably a '53) at a rod show last year, it'd been wrapped with "rusty green patina" vinyl.

It was obvious from 10 feet that it was a wrap and it just looked stupid.

'Twas then I decided that the fad had jumped the shark.

(But I'm still good with a clean survivor. Big difference)

Yeah...no thanks on that! I know there's a whole chemical process/treatment (besides years of salty wintery roads) to get that "rat rod rust" look, but I've not see a wrap before!!! SHEEESH!

It's just a term used to convey positive "character" sentiment towards wear and aging.

Yes...patina is that subtle essence that gives something a "suchness"...IMO.

Patina doesn't add value but, it indicates original rather than restored.

In this day and age when everything is OVER-"restored" to the point where the car is more perfect than it ever looked at the factory. Even worse, "resto-mod" (which is IMO code for abortion or frankenstein). Now before you dog pile on me, yes, there is a place for outlaws but its a shame when instead of preserving a classic, the "restorer" is too lazy to do it right and instead destroys another piece of history and turns it into something the car never was.

Pre-67 bus owners go crazy for it and a 23 window deluxe sunroof bus with patina commands damn close to pre-A 356 prices.

Neglected is not patina, Patina is generally a well maintained car that is driven or that has aged with grace. It is a polished surface that has lost some of it's shine, or paint polish marks, parts that are worn from use, but not worn out, road usage things! Rust is never patina!
