What a bunch of a-holes. That photo should be all over twitter etc. If I see old people at shops, waiting at the taxi rank, and I have time, I'll ask if they need a lift home. Most of them are more than happy to accept the ride. I show them my security license and it puts most at ease. It saves them a few bucks they can use elsewhere. My wife does it as well. They don't seem so concerned when she asks.

maybe there's a free seat in the other direction

maybe she was offered a seat by folks, but the old bat insisted she standing because she has only 1 stop to go and has trouble getting up again from the seat.
