Oh, so the new kids have, like, wires and tubes and all of that? In the early days of nuclear stuff we had literal rooms full of computers - which probably ran on caffeine and nicotine...

Much of this was done for calculating the roughly-random interactions of neutrons with interesting things like uranium and plutonium. Nicholas Metropolis and John von Neumann termed the process as the "Monte Carlo" method and, to put it lightly, it now kind of defines how things you interact with every day are decided.

Mount Rainier Shadow
Mount Rainier in Washington state is 4,392 meters tall, the tallest volcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc. During a recent sunrise, the volcano cast its shadow on the rather low altitude cloud deck over Puyallup, Washington. Photographer Lisa Bishop captured the moment in this gorgeous image.

During Soviet times, Ussuri Bay near Vladivostok was used as a dumping ground for discarded beer, wine, and vodka bottles, as well as porcelain. Over time, the North Pacific's powerful waves washed the shattered glass and porcelain into millions of smooth, colorful "pebbles." Today, this once-barren and polluted area has become a beloved tourist attraction, known as Glass Beach. Visitors from around the world pay to experience its extraordinary beauty.

Here are "then & now" photos of the Eagle Nest Rock formation in the Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona along old Route 66. Originally, Eagle Nest Rock was about fifteen feet tall or 35 ft from the bottom of the base and was once a headliner for the park and can be seen on many historic postcards. From the superintendent’s reports, there actually had been eagles nesting on top, but they moved away before it fell during a very wet winter of 1941. The hoodoo (also called a tent rock, fairy chimney, or earth pyramid) was sandstone in the Sonsela Member of the Chinle Formation.

Intelsat III F-2
Was a ComSat Corp. commercial communications satellite manufactured by TRW Inc. and launched from Cape Canaveral on December 19, 1968 using a Thor Delta-63 rocket. The satellite, positioned 35,786 km above Brazil (24°W), provided coverage over the Atlantic region through March 1970. The Intelsat 3 program comprised a series of 8 nearly identical communications satellites, it was the first to provide global coverage. They were inserted into geosynchronous orbits over various equatorial areas and provided reception and retransmission capabilities with 1200 two-way voice circuits or 4 TV circuits. The satellite was a 151 kg spinning cylinder, 142 cm in diameter and 104 cm high. It had a despun conical high-gain horn antenna protruding from the top axis, total height including the antenna was 198 cm. The outside was covered with solar cells, which provided 183 W power to 9 A·h NiCad batteries. A SVM-2 solid rocket apogee motor was used for apogee maneuvers with a hydrazine monopropellant thruster for use on-orbit. Communication was channeled through two 225 MHz bandwidth single-conversion repeaters, consisting of two tunnel-diode amplifier receivers (5930-6155 MHz and 6195-6420 MHz) and two Traveling-Wave Tube Amplifier (TWTA) transmitters (3705-3930 MHz and 3970-4195 MHz). The horn antenna had a flat reflector angled 45° to the axis and a 19.3° beamwidth with circular polarization. Telemetry was at 3933 and 3967 MHz using an omnidirectional or Earth coverage antenna. Command was at 6175 MHz via an omnidirectional antenna. Even though it was designed for a 5-year service life, it ceased operations after only 1.5 years.

All of the old "slingshot" dragsters were like that, except the driver's legs usually went over the top of the axles. Even worse, the clutch was right between their feet. Here is the clutch explosion that cost Don Garlits half of one of his feet, and led him to develop the rear engined dragster:

It’s referred to as:
"The Miracle"
It’s the Untold story of how a Mexican mechanic saved Ferrari.
In 1950, the Pan American Race emerged. One of the most demanding endurance races in history that tested the best cars and the most experienced and daring drivers of the time.
Umberto Maglioli in his Ferrari 375 Plus was leading the fourth and final stage of the race. Shortly before finishing stage four, his car began to fail. His Ferrari 375 Plus had an oil leak through a hole in the carter.
In the middle of nowhere and without a spare part for this vital part of the car, hopes of finishing the race were practically nil.
On the fifth leg of the race and when the car was practically about to stop working, Umberto Maglioli made a stop in the middle of the road when he saw a small workshop called “El Milagro”.
Maglioli was received by Renato Martinez who was the owner and sole mechanic of the workshop in the middle of nowhere. Renato Martinez confirmed to Maglioli that it was in fact an oil leak in the crankcase and that he had a "creative" solution to repair it in moments. At least to be able to finish their journey.
Renato Martinez caught a bucket and a big bar of soap. He also took three small bottles of Coca-Cola and gave them to Maglioli saying, "While you drink this Coke I will repair your car."
An Unbeliever Maglioli could only sit, drink the coke and wait for a miracle. Meanwhile, Renato Martinez dismantled the Ferrari and using the bar of soap began to gradually rub the carter with it. By friction the soap melted and created a paste that sealed the leak hole. Soap "cuts" the oil and adheres to the metal in the crankcase and when solidified it became hard as a rock.
Amazed, Maglioli thanked Renato and pulled out of Ferrari a small Roliflex camera which he used to capture that miraculous moment. Workshop "El Milagro" and Renato next to the Ferrari 375 Plus under repair were immortalized.
Umberto Maglioli in his Ferrari 375 Plus, finished the fifth stage of the race in first place and changed Ferrari history forever.
While Ferrari was a well-known car in Europe, it wasn’t in America and the brand was far from being an economically viable business. Ferrari desperately needed to prove to America that their cars were superior, fast and reliable. Winning the race would bring them recognition and with its sales in the United States, which would help them save the brand from bankruptcy.
Some time later, Renato Martinez received by mail the printed photograph Maglioli had taken of that moment. The photograph was signed:
"To my friend Renato M. From Umberto Maglioli. "
The photograph came along with a letter thanking Renato and said: "Renato, The Mexican Miracle that helped Ferrari."
That letter was signed by a man named Enzo Ferrari.

"Soap "cuts" the oil and adheres to the metal in the crankcase and when solidified it became hard as a rock": Any idea how the chemistry of that would work?

Some Ferraris had carter fuel pumps,
but they generally don't leak oil ;)

I can't help but think "carter" is an autocorrect for "cracked part".

In '84 I ran over a piece of exhaust which fell off the car ahead. It tumbled and struck the diesel fuel tank on my Rabbit. We were headed for the ferry and just before we boarded, I advised the loadmaster we had a leak. He said " No problem. Just identify your car to the deck crew. "
One of the crew grabbed a square of cardboard and a bar of Ivory soap. Lying on the cardboard, he reached under and rubbed the soap on the weeping fissure in the front of the tank and the leak stopped. It took a month before the replacement tank could be installed but it never leaked a drop in that time.
