Thom Richard was sat on the runway preparing to take off in the Gold Formula One event at the Reno National Championship Air Race in Nevada on Sunday.

Suddenly his engine started to sputter and he was forced to turn it off and signal to the marshals he was unable to fly.


Yet the message from the Swedish-born pilot did not get through to three planes waiting to race behind him, and one nearly took his head clean off with its wing.
