He was also a decorated military pilot! Stewart became the first major American movie star to enlist in the United States Army to fight in World War II. As an experienced amateur pilot, he reported for induction as a private in the Air Corps in 1941. He was promoted to major following a mission to Ludwigshafen, Germany, in 1944 and was promoted to full colonel in 1945, becoming one of the few Americans to ever rise from private to colonel in only four years. Stewart eventually returned home and transferred to the reserves of the U.S. Air Force, all while continuing to make movies. During active-duty periods he served with the Strategic Air Command and completed transition training as a pilot on the B-47 and B-52. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1711987089.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1711987089.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1711987089.jpg |

The "X" represents the arrangement of the engine's banks of cylinders, which in this case form the shape of an X. This engine was developed in the 1920s as the powerplant for a US Navy aircraft that was hoped would win the Schneider Trophy Race. All 24 pistons connected to a single crankshaft in the middle, and in total the 2775 displaced 2,775 cu in (45.5 litres). On this engine, it was possible to mount four spark plugs per cylinder (two per side). It made an impressive 1,500 hp before the 1930s, but it was never fitted to an aircraft and only a few were built. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1712007090.jpg Inchelium, Washington, ca. 1905... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1712066250.jpg Jan. 29, 1886, when Carl Benz submitted the patent for a three-wheeled vehicle with gas engine to the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin, it created a sensation never seen before! The patent specification for that automobile – The Benz Patent Motorwagen http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1712066250.jpg Ferdinand Porsche in a 1903 Lohner-Porsche. The Lohner-Porsche employed in-hub/wheel electric motors (yes, well over 100yrs ago) with a 'gasoline' engine acting as a generator. Along with other versions that were purely electric, and another that could operate on either, or from what I can see, both power supplies, Porsche was a leader of electric car technology in every sense of the word. Porsche came up with the idea almost purely on his own at the age of 18 (or probably earlier ((update: looks like it took until the age of 24 before the first ones were built, purely electric, then added 'gasoline' engines as generators/drive motors)) and was in the right place and right time to have somebody fund and be able to build it with him. Porsche was in 1906 employed by Daimler-Benz, itself a relatively new company as Chief Designer. Jacob Löhner said at the time, 'He is very young, but is a man with a big career before him. You will hear of him again'. And boy did we. Just look at the history.. Even the original moon lander employed a lot of the technology and design from this system. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1712066250.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1712066250.jpg Time exposure at twilight as a U.S. Navy F-4B Phantom of fighter squadron VF-11 "Red Rippers" takes off from the deck of the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal (CVA-59), sometime between 1967 and 1973 (when VF-11 flew the F-4B). http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1712066250.jpg A Great Depression Christmas dinner in home of Earl Pauley, near Smithfield, Iowa, 1936. Photo credit: Museums of Western Colorado. # 1980.0013.0185 Officially founded in 1878, Telluride bore the moniker "Columbia" at its inception. However, owing to confusion arising from its Californian namesake, a change of name took place in 1887, and "Telluride" was born. The name is derived from tellurium, a metalloid element known for its tendency to form natural tellurides. Telluride's progress was initially hindered by its isolation, but a turning point came in 1881 when Otto Mears opened a toll road, enabling wagon travel through previously inaccessible terrain. This development attracted more settlers, although the challenge of transporting valuable gold-rich ore remained. In June 1889, Butch Cassidy, before his infamous association with the "Wild Bunch" gang, committed his first major recorded crime by robbing the San Miguel Valley Bank. Getting away with a staggering sum of $24,580, Cassidy's legacy as an infamous bank robber was set in motion. 1891 heralded the arrival of the Rio Grande Southern Railroad, masterminded by Otto Mears. Extending further into the valley, the railroad reached Pandora and played a pivotal role in facilitating the transportation of miners and goods. This newfound connectivity ushered in a brief but remarkable era of prosperity for Telluride, albeit abruptly disrupted by the Silver Panic of 1893. 1891 further witnessed a pioneering endeavor when Telluride's L. L. Nunn collaborated with the renowned George Westinghouse to construct the Ames Hydroelectric Generating Plant. This remarkable facility harnessed alternating current power and provided it to the Gold King Mine, situated 3.5 miles away. This achievement marked a significant milestone, serving as a testament to the feasibility of transmitting industrial grade alternating current power over substantial distances. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1712111735.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1712111735.jpg Berlin, 1945. I think it is a real photo from the 1970s when women were burning bras, and going bra-less.
