When you write a program, it's built over time of a bunch of parts. And while you're writing it and adding and updating parts, you test them. "Git" is a program that allows you to keep track of all of the parts and what order you put them in and any modifications you made to any old parts. If you make a change that's a problem, or maybe 10 changes back there was a problem, or maybe there are 10 different people all working on the same program and dude #6 caused a problem 12 changes ago, git allows you to track all of the changes and if necessary, you can "reset" back to where you were.

Here! This'll clear it right up!

Thanks Steve, I was beginning to understand your explanation until you added the image.
Now I'm back to square one.

This helps me unravel a little bit, the mystery that is git. Thanks.

It doan help me not the least little bit.

As far as intelligence goes, the artificial kind is second best-for now.

Elon said, and I paraphrase, we are numero uno because of our superior intelligence. What happens when our intelligence is surpassed by something else?

So here's a WAG:
Working Directory is experimental features they want to add but now in development sandbox
Staging Area is code testing and integration
Committed Files is Hal2000 Central Command already in control and perfect
Remote Repository is interaction with all the users of Committed Files? or is that backup?

How close is that?

Wheeler placer mine near Deadwood, Dakota Territory 1877. Note the cabins set into the hill, with an extension of the buildings built to the front. The outbuilding and fence suggest that the miners kept livestock.

High Dunes in the Namib Desert | Namib-Naukluft National Park is an ecological preserve in the Namib Desert in southwest Africa, thought to be Earth's oldest desert. The park is the largest game park in Africa, and a surprising collection of creatures manages to survive in the hyper-arid region, including snakes, geckos, unusual insects, hyenas, and jackals. More moisture comes in as a fog off the Atlantic Ocean than falls as rain, with the average 63 millimeters of rainfall per year concentrated in the months of February and April. The winds that bring in the fog are also responsible for creating the park's towering sand dunes, whose burnt orange color is a sign of their age. The orange color develops over time as iron in the sand is oxidized (like rusty metal); the older the dune, the brighter the color. These dunes are the tallest in the world, in places rising above the desert floor more than 300 meters (almost 1000 feet). The dunes taper off near the coast, and lagoons, wetlands, and mudflats located along the shore attract hundreds of thousands of birds. This perspective view was created by draping an ASTER color image over an ASTER-derived Digital Elevation Model of the topography. The image was acquired October 14, 2002.
