My famiily went there in the early '50s on vacation driving through on the way back to CA from IL visiting family. At that time, there was an out house (I think), a few sheds, & iron peices of the meteorite sitting around you could pick up & look at.

Back in 1967 we stopped there. Back then they would let you walk to the bottom of the crater and look at the shed that was down there. My brother and I were young teenagers, and walked down and back with no issues at all. Evidently they had so many people tire out and have to be rescued they no long allow anyone down there without special permits. There is not much to see, so it really is not worth the effort to go down there. The view of the rim is neat from down there, but not THAT great.
