Best pellet gun???

So last night at 2:00 my house was surrounded by 6-8 coyotes that wouldn't leave for at least two hours. Since I can't shoot in my HOA I"m going to go with a pellet gun..
Who's got recommendations ?

Consider a paintball gun cranked up high.

I like the paintball gun idea better than a pellet gun. I wouldn't even use a .22lr... either use something lethal or just scare them away. I don't like 'yotes, but wounding them just doesn't set well with me...jmho. I would not hesitate to illegally shoot one with my Marlin .357 and immediately go back inside....screw a HOA. Cops here will tell ya to do that also.....

Yessir...I heard a shot...if anyone asks

RWS (good German weapon). High velocity and high precision; you can mount a scope. However, while an air rifle is very effective for squirrels and the like, I am not sure how deadly they can be at longer range on a coyote...

Higgy will be along soon .
I have a RWS (Diana) in .177, my uncle one scoped in .22. Just not appropriate for a 'yote....

Kill 'em or scare them away....they are not stooopid.

I think it was Vash who turned me on to getting a .22 with sub-sonic rounds for some larger critters in my gun restricted hood. No louder than a powerful pellet gun.

I killed a groundhog with the 22 sub sonic rounds. You saying not enough power for a coyote? I don't know.

I have an RWS mod. 48 in the standard .177 caliber. I'm a deadly shot (iron sights up to 100 ft.) with squirrels and other similar sized pests. That's what I bought it for. I wouldn't consider trying to shoot anything approaching the size of a racoon. Anything smaller would probably be OK. I don't think even a pellet gun in the .22 caliber would be appropriate for coyotes. Either one would probably just wound them and cause a bad injury or long, slow death from infection or something similar. Maybe something big enough with a plastic bottle on the front of the barrel?

^^^^ (to Bob) and very unlikely to kill a 'yote. A tactical flashlight on strobe will likely scare them off....seriously.

Ok forgot to tell you all this would be short distances from my deck.. I've got plenty of high power stuff for over 100 ft. I"ve seen my step dad kill deer with a pellet gun so not worried about it being lethal .

My brother bought a pellet gun for the squirrels at his new place.
Not air, but spring actuated. I think the box said something about 1800ft/sec on it but could be wrong. It makes a heck of a 'crack' when fired. Think he got it at Big 5 Sporting Goods.

He's going to look into getting a 12 gauge since there are bears in his neck of the woods.

I wouldn't....but...

The RWS/Dianas are dead nutz accurate without a scope at 100'.

Get one

Has anyone tried the supposedly quiet pellet guns, like the Gamo whisper series? Our neighbors are VERY close, and i would hesitate to use any of the traditional high power pellet rifles. Doesn't need to be super powerful, just enough to kill a rat or chase off a raccoon.

Be careful - is this just an HOA rule, or is it local law? It's one thing to piss off the HOA nincompoops, it's quite another to violate the law. Many jurisdictions that restrict the use of "firearms" include pellet rifles in their definition. Please verify before you get in legal, rather than HOA level trouble.

That said, boy, coyotes are well beyond what I would consider as pellet rifle game. At least with a standard, self contained pellet rifle of the spring piston of pneumatic (pump up) variety. I have very powerful examples of both, examples that exceed 25 foot pounds of muzzle energy. This is absolutely the upper end of spring piston or pump-up power. My pump guns are actually completely rebuilt, heavily customized examples made to reach that power level. 12 to 15 foot pounds of muzzle energy is more "normal" for these.

Contrast those energy numbers with the lowly .22 long rifle, which achieves over 125 foot pounds at the muzzle. Most would never recommend a .22 for coyote shooting. These air rifles have about 1/5 their power. Just not enough, not even with a head shot. They will likely fail to penetrate the skull. On broadside shots, they likely will not get through the near side skin and fat layer.

Fortunately, there are air rifles up to the task. These are in a different category altogether, in that they are not "self contained" - they require some rather expensive support equipment. These are the pre-charged pneumatic rifles, which carry a very high pressure air supply, good for a limited number of shots before recharging. And that is where the support equipment comes in - most guys recharge them from a SCUBA tank. There are also air gun specific tanks available that can be used instead. Beyond that, you will need the plumbing to connect the tank to the air rifle, the valving, regulator, and such. This support equipment can cost as much as, if not more than, the rifle. Once you have it, though, it can be used on any such rifle. It's all pretty universal.

There are a number of manufacturers who produce these pre-charged pneumatics in calibers and power levels suitable for killing coyotes. Guys even hunt deer with the darn things. They ain't cheap, though. And, unfortunately, they operate with so much pressure that they are every bit as loud as a powder burning firearm of the same power level. There are, however, readily available suppressors made just for them. They ain't cheap either...

I buy a lot of stuff form the guys at Airguns of Arizona. Here is what they have to offer that would meet your needs:

https://www.airgunsofarizona.com/big-bore-airguns/

Pyramyd Air has a good selection as well:

https://www.pyramydair.com/a/Pellet_Guns/Pellet_rifles/1120/pp_4/ru_1

I would suggest one of at least .357 caliber. .45 caliber would be better. This sounds "big", but air rifles are a lot like muzzle loaders, and rely upon bore diameter to extract "power". They are not capable of generating the gas pressures of modern high velocity rifles, so they rely on larger calibers and lower velocities.

Hope this helps...

One of those would be perfect for your situation. They are very, very quiet. They do take a bit of shooting to break in, though, getting quieter as they break in. They start out quiet and get even quieter.

Why not just crack the window and cap them with a real gun from several feet inside the kitchen?

When I had a 'yote show up behind my fence several years ago, I was ready to use my Marlin .357....it would have been a 100' shot from my deck into woods. I told both my adjacent neighbors about the 'yote and that if they heard a shot....it was me. Also asked my LEO tennant at the time....what would they do if they got a call. Dispatch a cruiser...see/hear nothing...go back to Krispy Kreme .

Take out the 'yote with a lethal caliber from your deck, immediately go back inside with the rifle. Emerge again....'cause you just heard a shot, or go to bed....yer choich ....

But I don't live in CA either...
