Google and FB are subject to US and EU law. They are blocked in China. You can still get on them, but not via any public or even in-home wi-fi in China. No one cares about the personal content Tik Tok collects from its users. It's that Tik Tok, like WeChat (Chinese version of WhatsApp), worms its way into all the other apps and data on your cell phone. And they can usually get into your laptop from there.

If that’s the case, I would advice against letting the kids use it.

We know that Tik-Tok is spyware. Do you really want that on your internal network?

Yes.

There was a pretty damn good writeup from a gent who deconstructed it and detailed out exactly how malicious it is. It's a good synopsis.

I think we have no only been underestimating the CCP, but also the inherent dangers of corporate data collection in general. People have a simplistic default "if you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to hide" mentality which I think is horribly wrong.

A Chinese agent was able to use Linkedin to target potential sources https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-53544505 Each time Yeo looked at someone's profile it would suggest a new slate of contacts with similar experience that he might be interested in.

I don't break any laws, but I sure as hell don't want anyone at all monitoring any of my on-line activity.

I do indeed use on-line banking, and access my investments and credit card accounts from my home computer. It is on a Cat6 cable to my router with intrusion prevention built into the router, and I run anti virus software on the OS. It would be interesting to have a white hat hacker to show me just how secure I really am, or more accurately, how vulnerable I am to hackers.

I can help you with that Glen. PM me some details on your router - model, firmware, device name, credentials, what carrier you use, anything else relevant and I'll research and get back to you.

My youngest daughter and most if not all of her friends have it on their phones. I don't get too worried about it. About the only thing I can see China getting from this is a sense that Americans have WAY too much time on our hands for watching stupid stuff and learning new dances.

And their names, faces, phone numbers, address, shopping preferences, likes and dislikes, favorite movies and TV show, and all the contacts in their phone.

They can understand us better to develop new products (like TikTok) that Americans will gladly let into their homes (particularly if they’re riddled with spyware / malware) and / or that greedy American corporations (like Microsoft) will want to pay king’s ransom for if / when they’re called out for being a threat.

How hard would it be for the Chinese or anyone else to start gradually ratcheting up the level of threat once they’ve gotten their foot in the door? Automated building control systems, critical infrastructure / utility controls, eventually government... Anything on a network is vulnerable once one node is compromised. We’ve seen that before. You need to completely eliminate the threat to have no risk. Sure it may seem like “benign” spyware (is there such a thing?) but once it has a foothold and can infiltrate things who knows what it might pave the way for later.

This is a new kind of war.

.... but mostly just goofy dances. Her name, address, social security number, date of birth, is already out there thanks doctors office using a billing company with piss poor data security. What's the worst tiktok can do?

International data services have an average of over 5,000 points of information on every internet user. Tower Data and Cambridge Analytica are among dozens.

It's pretty silly to get twisted up over TikTok when Facebook has far more data on kids and has about the same level of integrity as the CCP.

I concede that 99% don’t have anything worth a spy’s time.

Here’s the problem, Julie, James and the office worker use the app as a source of information. The Hong Kong protests don’t exist. Tibet doesn’t exist. The uighers, forced abortions, etc.

A friend has a quarter million followers on tik toc. She makes kitten rescue videos. She’s also blonde and cute. It’s her world. She barely knows there’s an election on. It’s bad enough when Facebook and google have a choke hold on what we read. Now the Chinese communists want in.

Here's another reason to not have your daughter on Tiktok. Because everybody else is doing it.

Not a computer guy by any stretch, but couldn’t the “good guys” make a random generator to just completely flood the Internet with made up identities?

There could just be billions of made up SS, addresses, names birthdays etc floating around that separating out real ones would be a huge undertaking?
