Certs in any of the hyperscalars would be good. Google, AWS, Azure, maybe even snowflake will get traction.

I’ve been in software 26 years... cobol programmer, consultant, sales, executive etc... it’s not to hard to pivot into something new if you work at it for a few years. Happy to share ideas DM me and we can chat on the phone.

One thing my daughter did to get experience is when her high school required a certain number of hours of volunteer work she found a company doing a project replacing all the old switches with new ones for a new wireless access point system. She worked for free and they didn't want to hire a new person for a couple months project so it worked for both of them. She learned a lot of CLI knowledge for HP Aruba switches and Adtran switches as well as VLANs and actual IT experience. She may never use the knowledge, but it is practical experience you don't get at school.
