Why not just get a 4Runner with a roof rack and call it a day? When you want to sleep, fold the seats down and put a memory foam topper down.

My Buddy BKXC does the van life. but when it got below freezing he stayed at our house. i doubt you get cold temps in CA. so you should be good. Another friend of mine has a Sprinter. he loves it. goes out to Moab and to Grand Teton quite often. Just Camps wherever he wants. I would love to have a van, but just don't have the time to travel enough to justify it.
