Was never a big fan, until I was told I was the DD for a road trip to Richmond to see them. Yes it was a pretty good show, and well worth the free ticket.
RIP Eddie

99% sure on the Neal Peart RIP thread..NOBODY mentioned or said, "phew, at least it wasnt Eddie Van Halen".
two different people and artist entirely. both legends and huge contributors to great music. but no need to mention RUSH here... RIP EVH. good good stuff. and cancer sucks.

in 4th grade my buddy brian had a boom box and the first VH record on tape. when we would go outside for recreation or whatever they called it, we could bring that boom box and blast it. i think that was 1980. the record was still sorta new. it blew my 4th grade mind and i was obsessed with rock and roll and guitars ever since. rip eddie

I was late to the party, had a son into a whole bunch of music I could not have cared less about until we drove round listening to it.

I had a neighbor Mike who was Maureen McCormick's brother (Marcia, Marcia, Marcia). He had a restaurant/ club in Calabasas called "The Mineshaft".
I was getting ready to go in the Army and he let me hang at the club and later went to see a band down in Hollywood, Van Halen right before they broke big. When I got to Germany after basic they would BLAST the debut VH album in the barracks. We listened to it incessantly. Later saw them at the US Festival in '83 and Monsters Of Rock tour. Also saw a drunk Eddie and Sammy Hagar at the theater at The Oaks mall in Thousand Oaks when they were first getting together ("We're Van Hagar" a drunk Eddie kept slurring). The boy liked his smokes and Schlitz Malt tallboys, that's for sure. RIP Eddie.

I always respected his contributions, and I know guitar players learned his licks, and he was an shredding innovator, but his sound never cut it for me.
A pretty famous guitarist sent me a curated playlist, and I could not listen for more than 2 minutes. |

Eruption was one hell of a calling card.
Saw them in their prime in LA at the fabulous Forum or the Sports Arena. An amazing, high energy show. In my opinion, VH was the ultimate party band and Eddie was the driving force. RIP
