In my experience, both will temporarily stun/confuse the dog, but the dog will decide to resume the attach sooner if it's just water. Water keeps "nice dogs nice".

What's amazing, is how if a dog's really out to get you, the bear spray will just stop him temporarily, and then he'll resume attack, then you have to hit em' again.

I've never seen a dog hurt by pepper spray. Usually they just stand there. Some will rub their faces in the grass momentarily and then go on their merry way.

They never "learn a lesson" though. If anything- they will be at the same corner next week.

I always thought they remember so they will have second thoughts. Thanks for the tip. It may save my life again.

Oh yeah, the entire city is leash only but some people.

I live in a 'leash only' area, but lots of people walk their dogs with no leash. Those people have too much faith in my humanity. If their dog runs at me, it's going to regret it.

Only use the wasp spray if you are okay with the dog being blind or dead

I used to jog and run a lot. At a previous house there was dog with no containment — just a little fcuk but super annoying and trying to bite my heals. On one particular outing the dog got along side me and I squared off and kicked a perfect field goal. The dog actually flipped end over end like a football on kickoff.

It was a thing of beauty but I was overcome with laughter so hard that I didn't appreciate the accuracy of my punt. That dog never bothered me again, for sure.

When I was about 16 there was a dog in this neighborhood that would intercept us as we rode our motorcycles by. The word was it was a former police dog and it was a German Shepherd. I was wearing some heavy duty leather boots and as this dog intercepted me I clocked him right in the head with the heel of my boot and a straight leg at about 20mph. The dog fell and tumbled from the force of it and I was satisfied I had nailed him good. About 3 seconds later he was back chasing me full speed and luckily I had enough acceleration in the motorcycle to outrun him. Scared the hell out of me!

It doesn’t seem practical to carry a bottle of water, etc. wherever you go, so the spray seems best.

Better yet, always go with a friend and kick him in the nuts. The dog will attack him while you run away!

Back in the old days I was on a service call to a house. I had just gotten out when their dog came charging up. I had a brand new leather coat so I took it off and put it in the car. I figured the dog could have my left arm and then I would kill it. Dog must have sensed I was serious about it because he backed off at that point.

My brother in law carries a large mag light. He accidentally killed a do that attacked him when he bopped it on the head with the light.

I like dogs but they also need to know where they stand.

One of the ladies in our neighborhood walks her dog and is out a lot. She has a stick or a baton looking thing that looks pretty heavy duty. One former postman I know carried a baton that was real stout and he said it also had a stun type electrical zapper on the end of it. He zapped a few dogs running up to him snarling and barking. He got bit by a doberman that just ran up to him from behind and did not make a sound until it sunk his teeth in. He made the owners have that dog put down as a viscous dog.

I haven't seen that bastard at all today. Maybe he sleeping? In the past couple weeks, I see it walking around whenever I go get a drink of water or make a sandwich. Maybe he got taken by someone? That mofo makes me feel like living in Africa where the Tsavo lions roam.

When I bought the place, I was young and still riding a lot, 300 miles weekly. The streets are very narrow where only car can go by. Its hilly, a mile up from the bottom. After a long day killing myself on the saddle, I have to grind up and over to my home. At the steepest part of the climb, about 15%, this old brown dog always hung out on the middle of the street near a flat, wider spot. It never fails, when he sees me, he wants to eat me. I would come up, dead tired, and here he comes, drooling barking after me. I always managed to go around him and sprint like hell up the steep part of the hill. If I am hurting, he must be too, right? He's all bark, no fight. Thankfully, he's old and always gave up a little before half way at the exact location each and every time. That dog got me in great shape btw.

I always wonder what it is about riding a bike that dogs don't like.
I have been charged by more dogs in the last couple years on my bike than ever.
It must be something about the pedaling motion because the same dog will show no notice if I'm sitting still.
As far as spraying it in the face...forget it, you will be lucky to get close to it's face.

Maybe? I often wonder if dogs from foreign countries like to bark or eat postmen or delivery guys? I was over in Asia last summer, I haven't noticed any dogs barking, EVen in the rural areas where the dogs roam free.

It has worked for me. The best defense is a good offence. When a dog charges me then I start charging them. Usually they back off. As mentioned above a good boot in the body or head should help to finally discourage them. Dog bites hurt big time.

Dogs simply don't like anything moving quickly through "their" territory. How many dogs chase after cars or bikes. They see it as prey to chase.

My old doberman was a total sweetheart and loved everyone, except any mailman. An intruder that came on the front porch 6 days a week and left something behind was a threat to her. I let the neighborhood kids come play in the back yard with her and a tennis ball. I had zero worries about a her biting anyone. The postman was sure afraid of her.

One of my former co-workers had a roommate that was a postal carrier. They had a Husky that also hated the postman. When her roommate would put on the postal uniform and go out to the truck their own dag went into a barking frenzy at the postman in the yard.

YOu know, I had to ask my guide when I was there about eating dogs. She said, oh no, they only eat a certain kind and they are farm raised and that's only a small percentage of people eat them. Its not like you see a pet Poodle and let get dinner. I made a joke about lunch to my kids pointing at a dog quietly walking along side the road, she had to explain the whole shebang to me.
