My natural father (I was later adopted by my grandmother) was a structural mechanic as a Sargent in the Army Air Corps and later the US Air Force and my mother was with him while he was stationed at Muroc Dry Lake base and lived in a tent. Robert worked on the conversion from a conventional elevator system to the newer one piece system that eliminated the vibrations when trying to control the Bell X1. Since they were living in a tent and it was a tad hot there she left shortly after I was conceived in the September time frame. She went back to Delaware and got a divorce and after I was born in May of 1945 she joined the US Navy. Robert stayed at Muroc and was there when Col Yeager broke the sound barrier in 1947. I never met him until 2003 as it was kept a big family secret all those years?

RIP Chuck Yeager...a true hero and a stand-up guy in every sense. The meaning of the word "Hero" has been diluted quite a bit in recent years, but General Yeager was the real deal. I don't usually react that much when I hear of someone's passing that I don't know personally, but I'll admit to getting a bit misty today when I heard about this.
If you haven't already, read his autobiography. His exploits in one lifetime would've been enough to make any 20 other guys look pretty good.

A couple of nights ago I watched on Amazon Prime "Legends of Airpower" first one in series "Chuck Yeager Episode 1".
Link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B01IFP2REI/ref=atv_hm_hom_1_c_iEgOEZ_2_9 Started out as a mechanic, qualified for pilot training just days before Pearl Harbor. Part of why he rose though the ranks was his understanding of aircraft maintenance requirements. Had one enemy aircraft under his belt when he was shot down, but made it back by escaping though Spain. Policy was downed pilots like him that were helped by the resistance were grounded. He fought it and went all they way to Ike to get his wings back. Glamorous Glennis
