"I tell you, we got two categories of pilots around here. We got your prime pilots that get all the hot planes, and we got your pud-knockers who dream about getting the hot planes. Now what are you two pud-knockers gonna have? Huh?"

The Man was no pud-knocker for sure.

James, you echoed my thoughts exactly when I read the thread title.

Rest in peace and godspeed, Mr. Yeager.

On October 14, 1997 as a young Captain I saw General Yeager recreate breaking the sound barrier in the backseat of an F-15 at Edwards Air Force Base CA. Somewhere I’ve got some photos of the event.

It was an incredible experience. He spoke afterwards to the group of people gathered on the tarmac, I remember that West VA drawl as if it were yesterday.

Todays aviators are standing on the shoulders of giants like General Yeager.

“Say Ridley, ya got any Beemans?”

Godspeed General Yeager

A friend was in the same fighter group as he was in ww2. They socialized with each other. My friend said that he always stole Yeagers gfs from him.

RIP. One of the absolute best and a shining example of what we CAN DO when allowed to.

Godspeed. I hope to see you up among the clouds one day.

Hero gets bastardized on a daily basis, especially in 2020 when apparently going to your office job constitutes a “hero”. This man was a true American hero, and someone I’ve looked up to since I was a kid. RIP sir.

Never heard any desk jockey or Tweeter called a hero

Front line folks, on the battlefield or the COVID wards qualify
Even if they are captured, or die from the Virus

The rest...just chatter from the never done it’s ..myself included.

That guy had the biggest nuts than any man alive back then. That bird, the x-1 was basically a bomb/missile with wings. One o-ring leak or a seal burst, and blammo. RIP fellow aviator, your toughness, character, smarts and Patriotism will truly be missed. Godspeed Chuck! Merica!

All those guys, Bob Hoover, Yeager, Jack Ridley and a whole slew of other guys that flew by the seat of their pants because we didn't know exactly how things would fly.

For many years he sat at the same bar in Oshkosh during Airventure and just talked with people. Most said he was a very down to earth guy.

When Yeager was flying the X1 they would drop him and he would take off like a, well, rocket. Once he was gone Bob Hoover would zoom climb directly in front of Bill Dana in the B29 to try to scare him.

If you have a Prime account, Legends of Airpower has an episode on Yeager.

Agreed! Lots of narcissists have embraced our current dilemma to inflate their egos though. I’ve been to work every day, and I’m no damn hero. This man was a hero.
