Why is it nearly impossible to agree on a GOAT?

Because in any team sport I'll give you first pick at every position: each of our teams will still go .500.

If Titles are the measure, Bill Russell, who is just a great man, is the GOAT.

Eras do matter to me. The level of competition in the players era is a factor: Anyone know George Mikan?

Magic.

Bird.

MJ.

A kid on the West Coast who has changed the game.

One more!

I agree to a point - that point stopping at "average-to-very good" players.

Given access to the same training and diet regimens that benefits current players, those who were/are truly great could play in any age.

Chamberlain would be an multi-year NBA all star today That he'd never score 100 in a game like he did back then isn't the point - it's that he'd still be a dominate force.

The Splendid Splinter would very likely be one of the top (probably the top) hitter in baseball today.

Dick Butkus would still be, well, Dick Butkus.

And so on ...

Great post and I agree.

Can I go top ten?

I have very little invested in basketball...we go top five in baseball it is on.

We're on the same page of music when it comes to our apparent level of interest in basketball vs baseball.

The challenge for me in choosing a baseball top ten is that there have been so many players at so many position over so many decades that it's nearly impossible to compile a list that short.

I maintain, as I noted a few posts back, I'll give you first pick at every position and still go .500.

Maybe impossible to pick a greatest single player but what about a greatest starting team of all time? How about:

C. Chamberlain
F. Jordan
F. Bird
G. Johnson
G. Curry

Without giving it too much thought, here's a team that would probably go .500 against the one above.

C Jabbar
F Olajuwan
F Erving
G West
G Maravich

Chamberlain would score more now than he did then, given the way the rules are now. How could he not? He would still be bigger, faster and stronger than everyone else.
