Funny, when I did mock legislature in high school through the YMCA, my group successfully passed a bill banning all affirmative action at the Capitol building in Sacramento.

If you are talking about immigration, I would limit everyone. I would go back to almost zero as it was for much of the early early of this century. That is why assimilation worked so much better then. We reduced entry and gave the folks already here decades/generations to assimilate. The Asians have always assimilated very well into American (this include British, Australian, or other )society both socially and economy. Many of them came in the between the 60-70s. Within one generation, they sound, live and work just like any American only their skin color and facial features are different. I think you are talking about the other groups? Today, all these groups with the exception of the Asians all want to be ID differently and separate from this assimilation that happens naturally in the past. For example, the Muslims immigrants from the various regions.

If one was to try to design "affirmative action" to help the underserved, one would think it wiser to base it on income vice race, ethnicity, religion, sex, etc.. It would be much more effective and much less biased. Opportunity for young people in this country is likely a lot more impacted by wealth than any of the other attributes.

I always had a hard time explaining to high school classes that I spoke to that the poor Asians and whites in the class needed around 1450 on the SAT to even really start being considered for a scholarship while I could guarantee one to their black and Hispanic classmates (even if wealthy and privileged) with less than an 1100. It seemed to me that we were sending the wrong message to both groups. They had been brought up to believe in equal opportunity and this seemed a clear departure from that for the first time in their young lives.

Although I hate to stereotype, in general, I think Asians are the best example of the type immigrants we want (but that doesn't mean that any group in specific has problems if we have standards). The problem began when politicians decided to implement larger immigration quotas and a lottery system that has no quality standard (so less educated poor were intentionally increased to change composition of the population vice improve the quality considering education, skills, language, health, etc.). Then we expanded how we define those needing asylum to include even more of those that really were just fleeing poverty. I think discriminating against them is not only wrong, it is stupid. That said...I think we have enough (of everyone)..and should end the open border and lottery system for a smaller, merit-based one (regardless of race or origin).

Just like when someone wants to join your business or your family, the first question should be "how does that benefit us?" (in addition to them) as a nation.

My Vietnamese ex girlfriend from college is a perfect exaple of assimilation. She's a post-doctorate from U.C. Berkeley school of medicine. She also teaches and has a wonderful family who are going to be off to college as well. She immigrated in 1980 to the U.S. as a 10 year old.

I still say people are going to end up seriously hurt. A few people I know are packing heat. It would be not good if they were attacked.

No. Immigrants don’t have to lose their cultural identity while also being an American citizen. Assimilation takes many forms. We all don’t have to act and think alike, just be respectful, contribute to our society and acknowledge the cultural differences we have in this country is a strength.

How many of your ancestors were college graduates? Illiteracy is only passed on with full knowledge.

I think its a racially motivated crime but some of us here don't seem to think so. The vid came in my utube feed and notice the date so I can only assume its the latest. Did you hear that old man's interview and what he said about the racial slurs said from the attacker? This will continue as a copy cat crime jsut like a few years back where old people were hit in the face for fun in NYC by a bunch of young men with nothing going on in their lives.
