Yes, I was trying to point out that they seem to call certain things "hate crime" and others not, like other posters pointed out here. Looks like there was more than enough here, according to their own criteria of hate crime and the "evidence" they gathered from other incidents, to call it that. But they went really out of their way not to.

I too try to stay away from this sort of "news" but I'm seeing more of it every day, and perhaps staying quiet is the worst response. Then this strange tone of the coverage really seemed to have triggered me.

These stories are disturbing, and I don't think it's a "Summer of the Shark" thing.

The news is shocking. In my opinion, our world is getting less & less respectable and I believe that many of these instances are nothing more than people mimic-ing what they see on the news and are looking for shock value. I don't really think this is a racism issue however, Asians are the current topic of the month.

I don't get it. Maybe it is because I live in Portland and we have a higher than average Asian population? Not sure.


As an aside and personal note. When I was in my 20's-30's I had an odd realization. While I am a boring white guy, about 40-50% of my friends were Asian. Not that I have a weird affinity for any groups over another. It just was.

Today, also odd. a large number of my friends are Jewish. I think that my values resonate in the Jewish and Asian communities. I guess it has to do with where you go to school, where you work, and where you live. No matter. I seem to bond with folks in these groups.

There is zero reason in my mind to act out in a hostile way toward Asians. I am actually perplexed and confused about this.

(There ARE groups that I can identify that do have markers that could draw negative attention. For me? Facial Tats are a big one. Religious groups that dress / act differently also draw attention as a matter of conversation.)

But, back on the subject. In the 1980's Portland had a large SE Asian influx from the Vietnam War. These people were POOR. I can see that there were reasons that people made awful comments back then as the population stood out, spoke little English, and generally were not integrated into a significant part of the community. (I am NOT defending racism back then, just saying I can see that there were identifiable reasons for people to act awful) Today? I do not see anything that would even begin to raise an eyebrow.

The cause that people bring up is negative association with COVID.

I can't accept that. There is no causality.

Conclusion: Are there simply angry, violent people that need to take out aggression on others? That is my only conclusion.

Disclaimer: I've only lived here for the last 8 years on and off, so not fully qualified to answer. I do believe there have been more instances of Asians being attacked/verbally abused post-Covid. I don't hear things like Kung Flu or China Virus coming from very public figures here, but the type of weak minds whom that would attract, all have access to the same internet so locality doesn't really matter at that point. The whole dynamic around racial issues is different here (UK/EU) anyway.

I'm going off topic (ha!) but for anyone interested: I have my own "Bruce Lee" counter going. It's in high single digits in the last 8 years living in the UK/Germany as well as travelling extensively around here. It's when random strangers shout at me across the street, Bruce Lee! It's not particularly malicious, and I'm not hurt by it, but the fact is that it's happening only because I'm Korean-born and I actually do look a bit like him I would never imagine any normal people in the US or Canada to do that, it's just not something you do. So yeah, different dynamics.

I don't agree with calling it "China-Virus Kung-Flu" but I do think it is appropriate to call it the Wuhan Virus since that is where it started. It's no different than Ebola which was first reported at the Ebola River, and West Nile first detected in West Nile Uganda.

If the WHO doesn't want viruses or diseases named after the place of origin, then I think they need to come up with an official name rather than just complaining.

When is our society going to have the hard discussion about mental health? These people are sick, regardless of race. I have seen a similar video of a young Black man taking down an elderly Asian just walking down the street.
We have a mental health crisis in this country and we do not even talk about it at all.....we blame it on race or hate or Trump........but the bottom line is there is something really wrong with a person that can mentally justify this kind of attack.

Even though I was born and raised here, I always felt different than the traditional white folk. Why? Cultural differences. Even after generations, there are fundamental beliefs that are against the majority population.

These types of attack has been reported in many large cities across the US mainly in SF and NYC where there are large Asian populations

While an issue, the larger problem is the complete and utter lack of people in our society being held accountable for their actions - accelerated and abetted by the breakdown of the family dynamic, education and societal expectations.

There are videos of every race getting bounced by the absolute predators roaming our streets, soulless animals without emotional limits.

I am sure there's a lot of racial issues going on throughout Europe due to the mass influx of immigrants pouring into the western European countries. Eastern Europeans, no so much due to them being poor countries with limited social benefits for new immigrants?
