I cried when I said "Goodbye" to one of my mentors, Harry Wilmoth. I made it talking to his grandkids, wife, his daughter, and friends. Then when it was just me and Harry in the casket, I said Goodbye and I will miss you. I touched his arm and then I totally just lost it.
Can't remember the last time I cried before that. I would not be where I am today without his encouragement. He used to tell me all the time how proud of me he was. |

I cried (not like blubbering or nothin) the day may oldest daughter got on the bus for her first day of kindergarten. Don't know why that was so difficult for me but it was. I think it was the realization that my baby was getting older.

I cried when I held my oldest son after he got off the bus at Twentynine Palms after his first combat deployment to Iran.
I cried again the second time. I cried as I delivered my beloved father's euolgy. Then yet again when son number two returned from his first deployment to Afghanistan. And there I went again, when number two returned his second time. I wish I was done with tears but fear more events are in the offing that will elicit further episodes. _

I got kind of weepy when my granddaughter sang "At Last" at our wedding, and when my son received his Phd, and at his wedding.
The last time I really broke down and literally sobbed was when my wife had a miscarriage and I had to put down my dog Abbey on the same day. I thought I was going to die.

My dog shouldn't out live me, but part of me hopes she does.
I cannot remember the last time I cried because of physical pain, but pretty sure it would have been as a little boy. I have cried because of a loss....losing someone I loved. But the vast majority of the fairly frequent bouts of mistyness I reported in my opening post are, as I said, because of joy. Inspiration. Songs are the usual cause. A recording artist expresses a truth, perhaps about injustice or some other pitiful or inspirational human condition or conduct. As a kid, I owned the Ballad of the Green Berets album. That sort of thing. Humans can be really beautiful. And really ugly.

The last time I wept was when I had to euthanize my ol' girl. I was not ready for that hit.
The time before that involved a poorly controlled zipper.

Our pup is about to turn 15 or 16. He's still trucking. We are dreading the inevitable. I try to keep him as happy and healthy as possible.

Nothing wrong with a good cry now and then.
Lost my pup Syd in Dec. Took it really bad. There are still so many thing that can set me off about it. Things in the house , looking at the spots where he always hung out and not seeing him there. His nose marks on the passenger window of my truck and jeep ( I cant bring myself to clean them off). I had a full size bed in my office, where he always slept on when I was in there. That was his bed. I had to get rid of it last week. Every time I looked over at it, Id start tearing up. I think as I get older I think I'm getting more emotional over things. Hearing certain songs or videos can really set things off. Especially when they have a connection to or make you think of someone. My years as a first responder have hardened me up to alot of tragedy, but now and then something will break through that wall. My position with the medical examiner brings me up close and personal with the family members of the deceased. I'm the one that has to speak with and interview them. You learn to build that disconnect with the human side of the job. Its not easy, but you nave to . Its detrimental to your well being. Problem is, you get the ones where you cant hold back. I had a case involving a 7yo girl. Passed in her sleep from a seizure. The second I walked in her room and seen her on the floor I lost it. Took awhile to get myself together. Then comes the interview with the parents. Probably one of the toughest things Ive ever had to do. I had to keep stopping, walk outside, and let it out. Did that maybe 4 times. That was the day I said i was quitting after that, but my co workers talked me out of it. That morning stayed with me for a couple weeks.

Your first paragraph made me tear up, dammit. As a few have described here, I too suffer from late onset emotional tendencies. 2020 and the beginning of 2021 saw us say goodbye to my dog jack, a friend of 14 years. Then my mother in law Heather, who I have known all my life, she was auntie Heather right up until the day I married her daughter, when that moniker got a little weird obviously. Then just two months ago, my second dog, lily, passed and damn near broke me. Somewhere through all that, I became the guy that cries unexpectedly for the stupidest reasons, dumb internet stories or TV shows, and about so many things through the house that evoke memories of happiness coupled with loss.
I've never been particularly emotional, although animals have always touched me, but none the less the change is not unwelcome. Weird though, first time in my life I think that I have been unpredictable to myself. |
