Just picked up a new bag of Ruffles and another store brand of the same type and plan to analyze and document later this weekend. They were VERY carefully handled by the cashier and myself. Not even bagged. Rode by themselves in back of the Volvo. Kid glove treatment. We shall see......

I upstate New York, we visited a meat packing plant, makes you not want to eat hot dogs, and then the Freihofer's cookies plant.
Now that was a place to go. If you arrived when they delivered to the local grocery stores, they were still warm. But those chocolate chip cookies hot off the baking line... They had a "unique" recipe that basically slightly undercooked them, so they were soft...Holy crap goodness.

Back in college I lived across the street from Freihofers bakery on Washington Ave. It had a 'day old' store where everything was cheap. I loved those little chocolate chip cookies!

I go to the chip factory to get my fresh taro chips. Nothing like getting them hot from the kitchen!

Give the broken chips to someone who hasn't eaten today.

Quick update.
I did not call Frito Lay yet, nor have I opened these two 8oz. bags of dip chips. Will probably do that later in the week. But I did get to thinking about Russ's comments about bag size being related to chip damage. I've always favored larger sized bags because buying in bulk usually yields a better price per unit. But at some point with this product - it's no longer apples to apples. So maybe paying a little more is a better value. I started snooping and found a assortment box from Amazon by Utz that looked promising. I ordered it and after it arrived I took out one of the dip chip (Ripple) bags and dumped it on a plate. I was pleasantly surprised to see so many full size chips and practically zero breakage! My fav. dip for dip chips is cream cheese and I had just picked up a new container of some that was Strawberry flavoured so that's what I had. It was delicious! When I was finished there were hardly any chips left I couldn't use. Success! So now that my problem has been resolved....let's look at the numbers: RUFFLES (8.5 oz. bag) @ $4.29 = .505 cents/oz. PUBLIX brand (8 oz. bag) @ $2.69 = .336 cents/oz. UTZ (1 oz. bag) @ $8.15/42 oz. = .194 cents/oz. The only thing I need to work on now is how to get the dip style UTZ brand (or similar) in 1 oz. bags in bulk, without the other types of snacks that was in that box I bought from Amazon. (there's only 5 bags of them per box of 42). I have nothing against those other snacks, but overall I prefer a dip style chip when I am partaking of a bagged snack. The pursuit will continue and I will update as I have more info to pass along. I do want to THANK EVERYONE for their contributions to the thread. There are some quality posts here about one of our favourite national past times - snacking!

When I traveled a lot I always wanted to try the local potato chips and the local beer. There are some good local chips and some really awful ones - either too thin or too greasy. We had a great local chip here called Mumfords until about 5 years ago when Schear's bought the company and changed the recipe.

I like chips, maybe too much. And this thread is interesting, I've followed it.
But what's the problem? You're buying by weight, you get weight. A smaller bag doesn't help you. I've never thought to complain about the size of the bag my steaks come in....

My comments in the thread has nothing to do with weight. It has to do with inferior product. Broken chips - too small to effectively be handled. The weight only came into the conversation when comparing cost.
