My wife gets me pita chips and the bag is absolutely stuffed. It is impressive.

All of this talk (at least 3 posts) about using Fritos instead of potato chips is crazy.

If you've got onion dip, then using fritos instead of potato chips is like making a rum and coke with bourbon. Bourbon and coke is a thing that some folks like and that's fine, but it's not a rum and coke.

I haven't seen/had those. I like cheesits, and really like the extra brown cheesits. Still, crackers aren't a replacement for potato chips with dip.

And in my experience, they don't break down into tiny pieces. I like pita chips. They are great with hummus.

I miss Charles chips. The truck visited our office twice a month.

Kettle cooked are the crunchy ones that I like. We like the Fritos with just about anything, but prefer salsa, or Queso. The French Onion is for the potato chips, not the Fritos....chill out guys !

I remember the Charles Chips truck coming through my neighborhood when I was a kid. That would have been '73-75.

+1000. Those are the best Cheetos ever! I could eat those until I turned orange.

False advertising!

Quite a few years ago I called up the potato chip company and (politely) voiced my displeasure about this very topic, and they sent me a bunch of discount coupons.

Fast forward to tonight. I have some dip I wanted to consume and as usual - with this last half bag of Ruffles these chips are just way too small, so I am going to call Frito Lay tomorrow and try to get some info.

Starting off with......when your bag of chips comes out of the factory before any handling....do all the chips look like the ones on the bag cover photo?

At some point I also plan to buy a few more bags....pour each one out onto a large tray....and document by photo what the consumer is actually getting.

I was told once by a chip rep who was stocking his product at a store that all this breakage is due to the handling.

Well...if that's true it seems like they need to work out a better system of getting chips to the consumer.

Sorry for the long rant but stay tuned - I will update the thread!
You do understand this is why Pringles were invented.

https://www.mashed.com/209184/the-real-reason-pringles-arent-actually-potato-chips/

Quote:
As a true team effort, Pringles were invented with the sole purpose of addressing a singular problem — the crispy potato snack was originally designed to solve the issue of too many chips breaking in the bottom of the bag. This concern was the topic of frequent customer complaints made to Procter & Gamble regarding their other snack food products.*

Snack History says the company first employed an organic chemist named Fred Baur to solve this issue. Baur spent two years using supercomputers to figure out the best possible size and shape for the new chip and its innovative tube package. The dimensions he settled upon are aerodynamically designed to result in the least amount of breakage possible.*

Same here, still have one of the big cans. They use to deliver to my mother's offer when I was a kid.
I have bought them locally at Whole Foods, but here is a link to order them.

Baz, You do realize you're too old to be eating that crap, don't you?

If I were going to eat that stuff, I would at least eat Pringles. But I don't dare add to my cholesterol.

Best

Pringles are tasty, but again, they taste different from a regular chip, so they aren't ideal in a dip situation.

We never had the issue with broken chips here in any of the brands. Maybe it is the delivery to your area?

That said, I don't use any dip for potato chips.

What you do, is put how much dip you want into a small bowl, then mix in those little chips from the bottom of the bag.
Or you can do it like my buddy , who just scoops out the first few inches of dip from the jar, then smashes it full of chippy goodness, gives it a good stir, and eats it like a meal .
Your doctor will love this also

Since they haven't changed the packaging or the delivery and display of potato chips in 75 years, (except for the frankenchips like Pringles,) your only recourse if you desire only whole chips is to buy a couple of bags every time you get chips, (so you get one bag's worth of large, fluffy chips) then take the rejects back to the store and ask for new ones.
Two birds here, you get the chips you're paying for, plus you'll never have to buy chips again.

Personal dignity may be worth more to you than this option.

When I was a Cub Scout we had a field trip to the potato chip plant. Man you haven't had a potato chip as good as one right off the bagging conveyor belt still warm.

I don't eat many chips. 4-5 bags a year. It's true, you can't eat just one. They are empty calories with bad fat. For me might as well go straight for the ice cream.
